I saw Wall of Voodoo in concert back in something like 1982. They were the warm-up but were the most memorable of the evening. A song has been stuck in my head for almost 20 years and I'd like to know the name of it so I can try to buy it. The lines I can remember went something like--
I don't date girls in this city
because all of them think I'm trying to use them.
Or something close to that. Can anyone help? This has been driving me nuts for a LONG time. My e-mail is email@example.com

"camouflage" went top 10 in germany and the uk and the album might have charted as well...

If you read this will you e-mail me at- firstname.lastname@example.org -I am an old friend of Bruce and I would like to know how I might get a hold of him.

Did any of Stan or Andy's solo stuff ever chart in the US or UK?

Here are a few notes for WOV fans. Found something interesting. On the WOV EP there are really crispy rhetoric etched in the vinyl on both sides. Someone at the factory must have been bored or they let him out of Uba's school of philosophy. Pull yours out and look at it if you got one( No not that thing). Also there is a WOV song that I found on Just can't get enough NEW WAVE XMAS released by Rhino in 96. It is titled Shouldn't have given him a gun for Christmas. A very interesting piece indeed. I have a boat load of WOV, Stan and promo stuff that I am looking to trade or sell to other fans. let me know What you are missing. email@example.com

DANCE OF DEATH the hardest to find? Give me a break.
First of all it is a bootleg. So the ebay "import from Canada" means about as much to me as the cdr I can burn myself. That's why there are not that many bids. Since they are so hard to find, I can send you a few copies.
Date: 06/02/00 19:19:54 PDT
I have Dark Continent and Happy Planet on CD. I also have a CD burner. Anyone who is interested can contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Make "VOODOO" the subject.
Date: 06/02/00 11:02:17 PDT
Hey, all. Looking for someone with a CD of Dark Continent to tape me
a copy, or something along those lines. Let me know via E-Mail!
Date: 06/01/00 18:08:01 PDT
I thought I should inform everyone that another copy of "dance of death" has appeared on ebay and is getting few bids. This is one of the hardest WOV cds to find and an excellent CD. And Sam- I agree those guys at the wherehouse know shit about anything besides rap. I ask anything about WOV and all the bastards tell me is they can get me a call of the west for $18!

I have WOV - The Ugly Americans in Australia and Index mastaers on cd. I am looking for posters, flyers, t-shirts or any WOV related items for sale or trade. email@example.com

Still have "7 Day's in Sammystown" on CD if anyone wants it..contact me at TheatreX@aol.com....Found a copy of "Mexican Radio" bw "There's Nothing on This Side" at Streetlight in San Jose! Way cool, great shap, but I'm keeping that! A while ago some guy was looking for the compilation that has Polvo doing Mexican Radio...It's called "Freedom of Choice"...it's got some good stuff on it but I wouldn't rate Polvo's cover of Mexican Radio too high. Sam from San Jose (hey, Nate - you scour the Wherehouse stores too! - good stuff to be found cheap - since they don't know shit about music unless it's rap, I think)
Date: 05/25/00 14:58:52 PDT
anybody got the lyrics for the songs from the concert on "index masters"?
Date: 05/24/00 17:16:41 PDT
The Skulls, another LA band, have a few songs on complilations and released one album on the Buy Our Records label(it's near impossible to find). Also I thought I should inform some Dark Continent seekers that another one has surfaced on ebay and has been relatively low in terms of bids.

HOWDY !!!! KING RICHARD HERE....
On a random check on the 'net, I found this... A write up on ADAM ANT, opening act WALL OF VOODOO. (check out the "british band" part.)
This is from 1985
Adam Ant - No mere bug
Adam Ant in concert at the Orpheum in Boston, Nov. 20. The British rock group Wall of Voodoo opened the show.
Viva Le Rock!! Rock and roll was definitely alive and celebrated at Adam Ant's recent concert at the Orpheum. Ant's magnetic stage presence and his backup bands's fervent performance enraptured the Ant-hyped audience and sent them into a frenzy.
Although the lyrical quality and musical originality of Antmusic are less than outstanding, Adam Ant has captured a large following with his driving, primitive, provocative style. His show began with a ten-minute tease, where the stage lights were turned out and a recording -- interspersed with music and an incoherent monologue -- played with the audience's anticipation.
The tension exploded when Ant leapt on stage in a black leather jacket, shredded blue jeans, and tall black boots. The trademark makeup was gone, as were the ribbons and lace. Ant stalked the stage invitingly, flashing seductive looks at all the pretty girls in the audience. His dancing fluctuated between pretentious bump-and-grind and snappy, leg-twisting steps punctuated by kick-leaps.
Ant, singing in his usual chant-like style, rarely displayed his vocal talent except in screams and war-whoops. The band played loudly and well, often obscuring the lyrics that Ant was singing with the cacaphony of drums and the pounding bass line. But it wasn't the lyrics that most of the audience came here to experience, anyway -- it was the raw emotion that Ant is so famous for. All of Ant's songs were basically primal screams, outpourings of such generally repressed emotions as sexual desire and violent tendencies.
Ant gave his fans a place to vent their frustrations, and encouraged them to (Tom: The next word is intended to be mode 5, JR)Strip away their inhibitions. This sense of freedom plus his good looks seem to be Ant's major appeal. The crowd responded more to his playful strip-tease done to Physical in the second encore than to any of his vocal manuevers. Other songs which were especially successful were Viva Le Rock, Stand and Deliver, and Goody Two Shoes.
The opening band, Wall of Voodoo, almost stole the show before Adam even arrived. Although the crowd was not very receptive to them at first, calling for "Adam! Adam!" in between the first few numbers, Wall of Voodoo left the stage with the audience feeling happy and fired up.
Lead singer Andy Prieboy arrests both ears and eyes. With his deep, clear, rich voice and tall, almost anorexically thin black-clad figure, he looks like a giant exclamation point onstage. The band was often so loud as to drown out Prieboy almost totally, which was a shame. One wonders from where in his small body such a tremendous voice issues.
The band's music was similarly arresting. Synthesizers, bass, and drums dominated their powerful, entrancing music. During a brief period while Prieboy left the stage, the band showed off its talents in an eerie, haunting bit which sounded like demons screeching and the howls of the tortured.
Although Wall of Voodoo has had only limited success in America, a few of their songs were recognizable: I'm On A Mexican Radio and Far Side of Crazy, which Prieboy introduced as a song about John (Is this spelled right?)Hinckley's attempt to impress Jodie Foster by trying to assassinate President Reagan.
All things considered, the concert proved to be a success.
For those who preferred strong talent, Wall of Voodoo provided satisfaction;
while for undying Adam Ant fans, it was the ultimate immersion in Antmania.
JUST THOUGHT THAT MIGHT INTEREST YOU GUYS & YOU TOO

SR will play in Paris next september. that's fine :-)
Marc lives in Paris. that's fine too :-)
Now, I let you guess what could happen there ...
I already heard rumors from a very good angeleno source.
Date: 05/17/00 17:43:38 PDT
the best live album depends on your opinion. index masters is by far the easiest to find that has a live set. you can probably find a few copies of ugly americans(i think this probably the best) and every so often a copy of dance of death on ebay.
And to correct a previous post by someone, Grandmas House(the
song) was available on the later issues of EP.
Date: 05/16/00 20:10:55 PDT
Which is the best of the 3 live albums?
Date: 05/16/00 15:12:18 PDT
Ugly Americans... is out of print, so your best bet would be
to try searching used cd bins or various internet search engines
Grandma's House was a Ridgway-era best of that added one
"Grandma's House" (now available on the Index Masters CD). It was
never released in the US, only in various parts of Europe.
Hey Ms. Vieuxdoo - are you out there? Is this half brother

Does anyone know where to find "Ugly americans in austrailia.." on cd? I must have.....

Greetings from Norway! Great site. Stan and the WOVs have a lot of fans up here north. Its great music, but beside that I wonder why this music makes such a deep impact in us Norwegians. I still hope they will find it worth taking the tour over the Atlantic.

Has anyone got some good scan of the CD`s os Wall & Stan?
Please mail them at: email@example.com

To respond to ZR's question, grandma's house was never released on CD and really wasn't printed for very long by IRS.

Saw Stan Ridgeway at Richards on Richards in Vancouver for The New Music West Festival 2000. Great show. A little too acoustic, missed the twang and electonica I've grown to love, respect and expect. Stan's starting to inch over to the middle of the road. The new songs are pretty good but I miss the spaghetti western colourings and drum machines. There was a little to be had, but not nearly enough for me. Then again, making Stan stick to a twenty year old formula is not only unfair but would route him deep inside the classic rock dinosaurs that seem to be raoming the air waves these days. The show was recorded for CBC Radio 2 (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) and will play on a program called Radio Sonic. Might be netcast, just keep your ears open and check out the CBC website at www.cbc.ca

I saw Wall Of Voodoo back in 1984, supporting "The Lords Of The New Church", in a small club in Preston England, I was really pissed(in england that means you are not coherant or totally aware of your surroundings due to the amount of alcohol consumed, not pissd off) anyway, all I can remember from the gig is this tall guy wearing a cowboy hat and this wierd synth music, am I talking about the right band here?

Date: 04/23/00 19:49:33 PDT
It's only been about 4 or 5 hours since I posted my offer and I got about 12 emails with offers(granted most were guys who wanted the CD for some of their own auctioning). Anywho, I thought I should tell everyone that I have sold it for a generous sum($50!!!!!!) amd will not be accepting any other bids. Thanks a million for trying though. See ya! Al

I just happened upon this little site. I am impressed that there are other people out there that enjoyed the music of the 80s pop sensation that was Wall of Voodoo. As for the whole search for discs, I happen to have a European CD of Dark Continent I'd be willing to sell. I only have one copy so the ONLY first person will get this rare find. Email me at AlSmithee0@aol.com and hope you're the first to respond. Good luck. Al
Date: 04/23/00 14:02:17 PDT
What label(s) did Andy sign with when he was still releasing solo stuff? Nate from San Jose,Ca
Date: 04/22/00 18:10:40 PDT
Stan Ridgway reminds me alot of Lou Reed. Not only do they
look a little bit alike, but while watching Reed perform on
"Dave Letterman" the other night, I noticed small simularities
in the way both men sing. Their lyric styles are also very
much the same. I can't help but wonder if Ridgway was
influenced by some of Lou Reed's work. Wouldn't it be cool
to see them do a song together?
I'd like to hear what some of the other WOV fans think.
Date: 04/21/00 08:55:04 PDT
I thought I should mention to any seekers of "Happy Planet" or "Ugly Americans" that a few copies of "Planet" are on ebay for $5 that have no bids and there's a "Ugly Americans" CD for $1. Nate from San Jose,CA
Date: 04/19/00 10:30:19 PDT
Looking to buy WOV's Dark Continent CD. Has to be in decent shape. Would even take a CDR copy. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org

Wall of Voodoo used that dog statue before Andy replaced Stan.
In fact, it is pictured on Wall of Voodoo 1st EP, which is
pictured on this site.
Date: 04/17/00 19:57:40 PDT
HOWDY !!! KING RICHARD HERE...
Well said MS. V.
But I think I know where they got that from... Some book
lists it as that way, that the MORELANDS replaced BILL. There is a 80's
place on the net that also makes that claim that I found.
HUMAN HANDS were honored & played at the first L.A. PUNK ROCK AWARD SHOW.. such bands as X, WEIRDOS, F-WORD, TSOL, FLESHEATERS & others...
HUMAN HANDS with BILL NOLAN on keyboards, will be playing
the HOUSE OF BLUES in L.A on APRIL the 20th, I think... If you are interested
in what he looks like now, here 'tis... The picture below is of BILL NOLAND
in HUMAN HANDS JUNE 5TH, 1999
BILL playing the keyboards
& BILL (on the right) with JOHN-TALLEY JONES & DENNIS DUCK
Date: 04/17/00 07:20:54 PDT
Bill Noland was NOT an original member of Wall of Voodoo and was not a guitarist.
He was brought in as a keyboardist to help out when Bruce left. After Bruce's
departure Chas took over bass playing duties when it was called for, which meant
they needed a second keyboardist.
Date: 04/17/00 04:48:22 PDT
HOWDY !!! KING RICHARD HERE.....
"billy bob" NOLAND, huh?
BILL NOLAND was keybordist on the CALL OF THE WEST TOUR.
I was unaware that he was the original guitarist. Being that the band was
started by STAN & MARC. I find it hard to believe that MARC would let
someone else do that job. Anyway, if you have THE BIG HEAT album, BILL'S
name is on there. As well as showing up as a producer on the DRYWALL CD
that STAN made a few years ago. Inbetween that time, he was a member of
a band called HUMAN HANDS. hope that helps.
Date: 04/14/00 17:45:03 PDT
I've been a fan of WOV for awhile and have the 3 CDs from the Stan-era and 5 of Stan's solo albums. I heard a bit of Andy's stuff mostly cause a local Wherehouse in Milpitas had 3 of solo albums appear in their used section but I heard 'em but didn't buy'em.
Anyway, I was wondering if anybody knows whatever happened to WOV's original guitarist Bill Noland. I heard he did some of the guitar-work on the tours and filled in for Bruce for a few shows. but I never found out what happened to him after the band split. Anybody got a clue? Nate from San Jose,CA
Date: 04/14/00 09:38:44 PDT
Well, not really. The dog showed up here and ther while ANDY was with them. It was on the cover of HAPPY PLANET. & also on the ARSENIO HALL SHOW. HALL even asked about it during the interview. I have also seen some live shows where it was sitting onstage next to MARC.
Date: 04/13/00 01:26:05 PDT
To the person that was after Mexican Radio Mp3, try Audiogalaxy. Or download Napster (Napster.com) there are heaps to choose from there. Hope this helps. Good Luck! JP
Date: 04/12/00 16:59:10 PDT
The dog on the cover of the EP is the band's old mascot, Bruiser the Dog. Bruiser was also in the liner note art of Index Masters and the video for "Mexican Radio." He wasn't seen nearly as often in the days with Andy as he was with Stan.
Date: 04/12/00 16:56:17 PDT
I was talking to my girlfriend the other night about the perfect mix tape. We both mentioned Mexican Radio, and just talked about where we were everytime we heard it. Quite amazing, I'm currently scouring the net for an mp3 version. Has anyone seen anything? Please respond of you know where I can find one...
Date: 04/12/00 05:20:08 PDT
I really don't know much about WOV being only seventeen and having known about them only by hearing Mexican radio on an all night music video show called Rage, when it was being programmed by DEVO, this is an australian show, so you've probably never heard about it. Anyway I have a few of their albums from rummaging through second hand record stores and I just want to know what is that little dog thing on the cover of that EP with Passenger, longarm, ring of Fire ect.
Date: 04/04/00 18:41:53 PDT
why is it that musicimports.com lists the artist for dark continent as sandoz? would not pay that much for a disc if is not wov's.
would you? any info would be great.
Date: 04/03/00 18:31:16 PDT
Does everyone remember the little plastic animals Stan used to throw into the audience when they would sing "Animal Day"? I think I still have some somewhere.......
Date: 04/02/00 17:59:55 PDT
I thought I should mention to anyone still trying to find Dark Continent, if you're using musicimports.com(they sell it for $26.99 and $10 for shipping) you should know I recently found out(viva my friend) that it is no longer selling Dark Continent after a week or so from today(april 2). Good luck to obtaining this excellent disc! Nate from San Jose, CA
Date: 03/31/00 21:35:14 PST
WOW! I don't believe I actually found a WOV site. I only searched for it for shits and giggles. This is really awesome. I didn't imagine there were that many fans out there. I can't seem to find anyone that even knows anything the band except for what they see on MTV II.
Hey Sam from SJ- Did you really not like the "Seven Days' release?? I htought it was possibly their best-but I also agree they are not they are not the same w/o Stan Ridgeway and the fine production of his solo releases is an example other musicians should pay attention to. Anyone else have any comments?? Would be glad to hear them.--- Bluehen in TX
Date: 03/24/00 22:51:33 PST
OK, all you Dark Continent seekers....I read a while back when I was desperately seeking this rare CD that it was on GEMM as a Dutch Import. I tried to order it at the time but it was out of print...well, apparently IT'S BAAACK...some place called Music Imports & also WMI...personally I would pass on WMI from past experience. ALSO!!! As threatened in an earlier message this year..I just found and bought a copy of Seven Days in Sammystown tonight at Rasputin Music in beautiful downtown Campbell CA. Being as I hate all WOV that is post-Stan, I don't want it but I know lots of people out there do. If you're interested contact me and we'll discuss it. I already emailed someone who posted a message in February looking for it so I'd probably give them first shot if they're still chasing after it. Oh, and ANOTHER thing. I just picked up Department of Crooks, finally, for $2 brand new at the aforementioned Rasputin's and it's worth every penny! Actually I think it's pretty good. Sam from San Jose (TheatreX@aol.com)

HOWDY !!!! KING RICHARD HERE...
Oh grand and glorious day....
A while back, I swapped a couple of emails with NED LEUKHARDT (like I need to tell any of you who he is...)I asked him for an autogragh. I am trying to get one from every member of W.O.V. I have STAN'S, I got someone to get me one of MARC'S. JOE is gonna be the hardest, but NED was not gonna be that easy either living in NORWAY & all... So I asked for one, put it on a picture, an old grocery list, hey don't throw that candy wrapper away, sign the thing & send it on. He told me sure thing...
That was a while back, and to be honest, I had forgotten about it. In the mail today, I got a package.. It was the cd of the band NED is in called TONI & THE TOMCATS. I opened it up and on the last page of the insert, he wrote "TO RICHARD:I REMAIN ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE ATLANTIC. NED LEUKHARDT"
NED, if you read this, I want to say, the cd is great
!!! You are one amazing drummer.
And a great person. You didn't have to send the cd.
But you did.
NED, thanks pal.

HOWDY !!!! KING RICHARD HERE....
Uh, just wanting to let some of you know this.
On ebay, someone is selling a cassette tape of WALL OF VOODOO demos from 1979 that he said the band would throw copies of out to the audience at the shows. True it is a great find but before you shell out the 25.00 that he is wanting as a starting price for this, it is not as hard to get ahold of this thing as he says.
There is a bootleg called TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER:the '78/ '79 demos.
These songs except for the MEXICAN RADIO (rockabilly ver.) are on it.
It also seems that bootleg has more songs on it, including a ealy version of LONGARM called YOU DO ANYTHING YOU WANT.
There are quite a few people who post on the WALL that
have copies of this, so before you bid that much money for it, try asking
around on here. Now if we could get people to stop putting DARK CONTINANT
on ebay with a starting bid of 25.00 or more, we would have something....
Just trying to help.

I wrote to the guy that wrote that about the skulls on
I asked him if it was the same band that MARC MORELAND (WALL OF VOODOO) was in, this was what he said.
>Great to hear from you and I'm glad you liked our little
no, 'The Skulls' you saw is not the same band as Marc Morland. Ours >was and
idea for a web-based movie about a fictious band comprised of undead
I guess that answers that....

Marc Moreland was pretty active in the original wave of punk bands
in the LA area. He played in the Bags and the Skulls. There's
a "Live At The Masque" CD which features him playing along with
both of these bands in fund-raising concert for the Masque. His
brother Bruce also played in punk bands, including the Weirdos.

Has anyone heard of Marc Moreland's band in the (80's?) called
"The Skulls?" I looked it up on one of those MUZE machines in a record shop and found that the alblum is out of print. Anyone want to comment on it?
I also found a website dedicated to a band called "The Skulls," but I have no way of knowing if this is the same "Skulls" band that Marc Moreland was in because the site has absolutely no useful information on it...however it does have a video of some guys in skull masks stealing a little girls dog....take a look at it here:

My band is still looking for Mexican Radio Tabliture. We have the song figured out just by listening to it, but we want to make sure it is all correct. I have looked at every TAB sight on the internet, (That I can find), and none of them have Mexican Radio. If you have it or can transcribe it for guitar, bass or both, please, please, please help me out. Many thanks!!

The Bulldog statue is Wall of Voodoo's mascot, and is named "Bruiser," according to Chas Gray in a KCSN/Northridge radio interview back around 1985 (if memory serves me correctly). I received an exact replica of Bruiser as a Christmas gift about 10 years ago, and Bruiser stands (sits?) guard in my condo day and night. I saw a bunch of these statues for sale in Tijuana several years ago. They are actually piggy banks, with a coin slot on the dog's back.

This is for Espen in Norway - the statue was of a Bulldog from Alvarado St. in Los Angeles. I have an old Wall of Voodoo ashtray and some matchbooks with the statue on it. RebeccaS@csc-ut.org

Hey Fellow Voodoo fans!
I just stumbled on to this sight and it is great! I was reading the
the forum and it's nice to know there are people who still care about
the band whether it's Ridgway or Prieboy. I have been a fan for many years. There are a few things I'd like to mention. First, I absolutely
loved the Department of Crooks album!! I thought it was the most incredible record to come out in a long time! It definately sounds alot better than the garbage that's out there now. Plus I don't know
why some people didn't like his voice. I thought it was good. I've tuned so many of my friends on that record. Second, I had the honor
of meeting Master Marc Moreland at a Pretty and Twisted show in Boston
a few years back. I went to the show just to see Marc and praised him
up and down after the show. He was such a cool guy! I also had the chance to meet Stan after he played an acoustic solo set in Tower records in Boston during his Black Diamond tour. Oh yeah I also wanted
to say I feel sorry for those who are trying to win a copy of a "Dark
Continent" cd on ebay. I have seen the price go up to at least $80.00.
I think it's worth it. Well I have talked long enough. But I just to say to the band members if they are reading. You guys are the best and
still are the best. And Marc, thanks for giving me your time after that show. I hope I didn't embarass you. See ya!

The Department of Crooks web site is at: http://members.xoom.com/wallofvoodoo/crooks/ and you can download some MP3's of their music at http://wallofvoodoo.com/mp3's.htm

Hey! I've seen references to the Department of Crooks in this website, but I don't know who the hell it is....reason I'm asking is because I see that the local Wherehouse has a copy (used) for cheap, and I'm too cheap (ha!) to blindly take a stab at it. What is it, who's on it, why does it keep showing up from time to time on here? Must be some ex-WOV members involved, but is it any good? ALSO!!! I am so happy to have found "Work the Dumb Oracle" by Drywall - 1995 release, OOP, at the same Wherehouse - also found a promo copy for real cheap the day before! It's pretty good...more WOV than Stan's solo stuff. To the folks that are desperately looking for "Happy Planet" or "Ugly Americans (Live in Australia)", those things turn up around here from time to time (San Jose/Campbell/Santa Clara, CA) and I actually bought a copy of Happy Planet late last year that I sold (for a very slight profit - I paid for postage too!) to someone that found my plea for someone to take the P.O.S. off my hands - I am always scrounging in the bargain bins...if I find something I will post it and sell it to the first one who contacts me...I ain't no ebay, so it'll go cheap, beleive me!
Sam from San Jose (TheatreX@aol.com)
