I saw Wall of Voodoo in concert back in something like
1982. They were the warm-up but were the most memorable of the evening.
A song has been stuck in my head for almost 20 years and I'd like to know
the name of it so I can try to buy it. The lines I can remember went something
like--
I don't date girls in this city
because all of them think I'm trying to use them.
Or something close to that. Can anyone help? This has been driving me nuts for a LONG time. My e-mail is theroger@theglobe.com
Thanks!

Here are a few notes for WOV fans. Found something interesting.
On the WOV EP there are really crispy rhetoric etched in the vinyl on both
sides. Someone at the factory must have been bored or they let him out
of Uba's school of philosophy. Pull yours out and look at it if you got
one( No not that thing). Also there is a WOV song that I found on Just
can't get enough NEW WAVE XMAS released by Rhino in 96. It is titled Shouldn't
have given him a gun for Christmas. A very interesting piece indeed. I
have a boat load of WOV, Stan and promo stuff that I am looking to trade
or sell to other fans. let me know What you are missing. magic_mantis@hotmail.com

DANCE OF DEATH the hardest to find? Give me a break.
First of all it is a bootleg. So the ebay "import from
Canada" means about as much to me as the cdr I can burn myself. That's
why there are not that many bids. Since they are so hard to find, I can
send you a few copies.

HOWDY !!!! KING RICHARD HERE....
On a random check on the 'net, I found this... A write up on ADAM ANT, opening act WALL OF VOODOO. (check out the "british band" part.)
This is from 1985
Adam Ant - No mere bug
Adam Ant in concert at the Orpheum in Boston, Nov. 20.
The British rock group Wall of Voodoo opened the show.
Viva Le Rock!! Rock and roll was definitely alive and
celebrated at Adam Ant's recent concert at the Orpheum. Ant's magnetic
stage presence and his backup bands's fervent performance enraptured the
Ant-hyped audience and sent them into a frenzy.
Although the lyrical quality and musical originality of Antmusic are less than outstanding, Adam Ant has captured a large following with his driving, primitive, provocative style. His show began with a ten-minute tease, where the stage lights were turned out and a recording -- interspersed with music and an incoherent monologue -- played with the audience's anticipation.
The tension exploded when Ant leapt on stage in a black leather jacket, shredded blue jeans, and tall black boots. The trademark makeup was gone, as were the ribbons and lace. Ant stalked the stage invitingly, flashing seductive looks at all the pretty girls in the audience. His dancing fluctuated between pretentious bump-and-grind and snappy, leg-twisting steps punctuated by kick-leaps.
Ant, singing in his usual chant-like style, rarely displayed his vocal talent except in screams and war-whoops. The band played loudly and well, often obscuring the lyrics that Ant was singing with the cacaphony of drums and the pounding bass line. But it wasn't the lyrics that most of the audience came here to experience, anyway -- it was the raw emotion that Ant is so famous for. All of Ant's songs were basically primal screams, outpourings of such generally repressed emotions as sexual desire and violent tendencies.
Ant gave his fans a place to vent their frustrations, and encouraged them to (Tom: The next word is intended to be mode 5, JR)Strip away their inhibitions. This sense of freedom plus his good looks seem to be Ant's major appeal. The crowd responded more to his playful strip-tease done to Physical in the second encore than to any of his vocal manuevers. Other songs which were especially successful were Viva Le Rock, Stand and Deliver, and Goody Two Shoes.
The opening band, Wall of Voodoo, almost stole the show before Adam even arrived. Although the crowd was not very receptive to them at first, calling for "Adam! Adam!" in between the first few numbers, Wall of Voodoo left the stage with the audience feeling happy and fired up.
Lead singer Andy Prieboy arrests both ears and eyes. With his deep, clear, rich voice and tall, almost anorexically thin black-clad figure, he looks like a giant exclamation point onstage. The band was often so loud as to drown out Prieboy almost totally, which was a shame. One wonders from where in his small body such a tremendous voice issues.
The band's music was similarly arresting. Synthesizers, bass, and drums dominated their powerful, entrancing music. During a brief period while Prieboy left the stage, the band showed off its talents in an eerie, haunting bit which sounded like demons screeching and the howls of the tortured.
Although Wall of Voodoo has had only limited success in America, a few of their songs were recognizable: I'm On A Mexican Radio and Far Side of Crazy, which Prieboy introduced as a song about John (Is this spelled right?)Hinckley's attempt to impress Jodie Foster by trying to assassinate President Reagan.
All things considered, the concert proved to be a success.
For those who preferred strong talent, Wall of Voodoo provided satisfaction;
while for undying Adam Ant fans, it was the ultimate immersion in Antmania.

Saw Stan Ridgeway at Richards on Richards in Vancouver
for The New Music West Festival 2000. Great show. A little too acoustic,
missed the twang and electonica I've grown to love, respect and expect.
Stan's starting to inch over to the middle of the road. The new songs are
pretty good but I miss the spaghetti western colourings and drum machines.
There was a little to be had, but not nearly enough for me. Then again,
making Stan stick to a twenty year old formula is not only unfair but would
route him deep inside the classic rock dinosaurs that seem to be raoming
the air waves these days. The show was recorded for CBC Radio 2 (Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation) and will play on a program called Radio Sonic.
Might be netcast, just keep your ears open and check out the CBC website

He was brought in as a keyboardist to help out when Bruce

they needed a second keyboardist.

someone else do that job. Anyway, if you have THE BIG HEAT album, BILL'S

that STAN made a few years ago. Inbetween that time, he was a member of
a band called HUMAN HANDS. hope that helps.

searched for it for shits and giggles. This is really awesome. I didn't
imagine there were that many fans out there. I can't seem to find anyone
that even knows anything the band except for what they see on MTV II.
Hey Sam from SJ- Did you really not like the "Seven Days'
release?? I htought it was possibly their best-but I also agree they are
not they are not the same w/o Stan Ridgeway and the fine production of
his solo releases is an example other musicians should pay attention to.
Anyone else have any comments?? Would be glad to hear them.--- Bluehen

OK, all you Dark Continent seekers....I read a while
back when I was desperately seeking this rare CD that it was on GEMM as
a Dutch Import. I tried to order it at the time but it was out of print...well,
apparently IT'S BAAACK...some place called Music Imports & also WMI...personally
I would pass on WMI from past experience. ALSO!!! As threatened in an earlier
message this year..I just found and bought a copy of Seven Days in Sammystown
tonight at Rasputin Music in beautiful downtown Campbell CA. Being as I
hate all WOV that is post-Stan, I don't want it but I know lots of people
out there do. If you're interested contact me and we'll discuss it. I already
emailed someone who posted a message in February looking for it so I'd
probably give them first shot if they're still chasing after it. Oh, and
ANOTHER thing. I just picked up Department of Crooks, finally, for $2 brand
new at the aforementioned Rasputin's and it's worth every penny! Actually
I think it's pretty good. Sam from San Jose (TheatreX@aol.com)

HOWDY !!!! KING RICHARD HERE...
Oh grand and glorious day....
A while back, I swapped a couple of emails with NED LEUKHARDT
(like I need to tell any of you who he is...)I asked him for an autogragh.
I am trying to get one from every member of W.O.V. I have STAN'S, I got
someone to get me one of MARC'S. JOE is gonna be the hardest, but NED was
not gonna be that easy either living in NORWAY & all... So I asked
for one, put it on a picture, an old grocery list, hey don't throw that
candy wrapper away, sign the thing & send it on. He told me sure thing...
That was a while back, and to be honest, I had forgotten about it. In the mail today, I got a package.. It was the cd of the band NED is in called TONI & THE TOMCATS. I opened it up and on the last page of the insert, he wrote "TO RICHARD:I REMAIN ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE ATLANTIC. NED LEUKHARDT"
NED, if you read this, I want to say, the cd is great
!!! You are one amazing drummer.
And a great person. You didn't have to send the cd.
But you did.
NED, thanks pal.

HOWDY !!!! KING RICHARD HERE....
Uh, just wanting to let some of you know this.
On ebay, someone is selling a cassette tape of WALL OF
VOODOO demos from 1979 that he said the band would throw copies of out
to the audience at the shows. True it is a great find but before you shell
out the 25.00 that he is wanting as a starting price for this, it is not
as hard to get ahold of this thing as he says.
There is a bootleg called TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER:the
'78/ '79 demos.
These songs except for the MEXICAN RADIO (rockabilly
ver.) are on it.
It also seems that bootleg has more songs on it, including
a ealy version of LONGARM called YOU DO ANYTHING YOU WANT.
There are quite a few people who post on the WALL that
have copies of this, so before you bid that much money for it, try asking
around on here. Now if we could get people to stop putting DARK CONTINANT
on ebay with a starting bid of 25.00 or more, we would have something....
Just trying to help.

I wrote to the guy that wrote that about the skulls on
the website.
I asked him if it was the same band that MARC MORELAND
(WALL OF VOODOO) was in, this was what he said.
>Great to hear from you and I'm glad you liked our little
movie...
no, 'The Skulls' you saw is not the same band as Marc
Morland. Ours >was and
idea for a web-based movie about a fictious band comprised
of undead
>rockers.
I guess that answers that....

Marc Moreland was pretty active in the original wave
of punk bands
in the LA area. He played in the Bags and the Skulls.
There's
a "Live At The Masque" CD which features him playing
along with
both of these bands in fund-raising concert for the Masque.
His
brother Bruce also played in punk bands, including the
Weirdos.

I also found a website dedicated to a band called "The

The Bulldog statue is Wall of Voodoo's mascot, and is
named "Bruiser," according to Chas Gray in a KCSN/Northridge radio interview
back around 1985 (if memory serves me correctly). I received an exact replica
of Bruiser as a Christmas gift about 10 years ago, and Bruiser stands (sits?)
guard in my condo day and night. I saw a bunch of these statues for sale
in Tijuana several years ago. They are actually piggy banks, with a coin
slot on the dog's back.

Hey Fellow Voodoo fans!
I just stumbled on to this sight and it is great! I was
reading the
the forum and it's nice to know there are people who
still care about
the band whether it's Ridgway or Prieboy. I have been
a fan for many years. There are a few things I'd like to mention. First,
I absolutely
loved the Department of Crooks album!! I thought it was
the most incredible record to come out in a long time! It definately sounds
alot better than the garbage that's out there now. Plus I don't know
why some people didn't like his voice. I thought it was
good. I've tuned so many of my friends on that record. Second, I had the
honor
of meeting Master Marc Moreland at a Pretty and Twisted
show in Boston
a few years back. I went to the show just to see Marc
and praised him
up and down after the show. He was such a cool guy! I
also had the chance to meet Stan after he played an acoustic solo set in
Tower records in Boston during his Black Diamond tour. Oh yeah I also wanted
to say I feel sorry for those who are trying to win a
copy of a "Dark
Continent" cd on ebay. I have seen the price go up to
at least $80.00.
I think it's worth it. Well I have talked long enough.
But I just to say to the band members if they are reading. You guys are
the best and
still are the best. And Marc, thanks for giving me your
time after that show. I hope I didn't embarass you. See ya!

Hey! I've seen references to the Department of Crooks
in this website, but I don't know who the hell it is....reason I'm asking
is because I see that the local Wherehouse has a copy (used) for cheap,
and I'm too cheap (ha!) to blindly take a stab at it. What is it, who's
on it, why does it keep showing up from time to time on here? Must be some
ex-WOV members involved, but is it any good? ALSO!!! I am so happy to have
found "Work the Dumb Oracle" by Drywall - 1995 release, OOP, at the same
Wherehouse - also found a promo copy for real cheap the day before! It's
pretty good...more WOV than Stan's solo stuff. To the folks that are desperately
looking for "Happy Planet" or "Ugly Americans (Live in Australia)", those
things turn up around here from time to time (San Jose/Campbell/Santa Clara,
CA) and I actually bought a copy of Happy Planet late last year that I
sold (for a very slight profit - I paid for postage too!) to someone that
found my plea for someone to take the P.O.S. off my hands - I am always
scrounging in the bargain bins...if I find something I will post it and
sell it to the first one who contacts me...I ain't no ebay, so it'll go
cheap, beleive me!
