Hey folks! I went to CD Europe on the web the other day, and look what I found:

B237945
Dark Continent
Wall Of Voodoo
Compact Disc Album
$20.95
Label: irs
Release Date: 9/30/91
Country of Import: Holland

You may recall I tried to order this thing last summer, and then it disappeared from the site. Well, I snagged it this time. $20 is too good to pass up. I can never find that thing used anymore!

So go order it before it disappears again!!! It's at http://www.cdeurope.com if you're interested!

Hello. I just watched an old IRS recordsw video, and saw the ''Mexican Radio'' vid. I've seen this about 13 years ago when my dad dubbed the copy off video. I was only about 8 or 9 when I first heard it, and I really only remembered some basic words "i'm on a mexican radio". My father pulled it out two days ago, and I really got into it, especially the drumming in the song, and the intro. I'm only 21, and do not remember WOV, or even remember seeing and of their vids on MTV, but that song really got to me. I ordered the CD ''Call Of The West''. I'm a musician, and I like this song so much, that I'm going to record a version. I have a 4-track studio in my basement, and really love recording songs that I've grown up with, or songs that are really ''out there''. I HATE mainstream music, it's so damn fake. If anyone would be interested in a free copy when I finish it, I'll be more than happy to send you one. I'll probably have about 10 or so to give away. When I finish the track, probably within the next month, I'll post again. If you would be interested, please post here, and I'll take down your e-mail addresses. I'll send out to the first 10 people. cheers.

Andy didn't have the time do the music for Elegant's Angels Episode 2 so he called Marc and ask him if he was interested. Being a fan of adult films and needing the money he said sure. The stuff he turned in for the movie is excellent. Really killer stuff. It is note worthy that Andy helped marc over the phone writing the stuff. The film was not finished when marc did the music so he had to go with the Director telling him what each one of the scenes was. They came on a dat labeled Department of Crooks Film. Each one of the songs was labeled "Red Room" "Kung Fu Fight" "Interigation" etc.

As for the porno's.....Not only did Andy do the music for the first one.
(But its under another name Like baby man I think) But andy plays a Pimp
at the begining of the flick. The Second film due out in december has music from
Dept of Crooks on it. Im not sure if anyone from the band is in that flick
but when it comes out we will see. My favorite songs on the Dept of Crooks
cd were the instramentles so the porn music should be great.

To Dave (the guy looking for tapes),

I found a few people trading in WOV, Ridgway and Prieboy tapes at this on-line tape trading page (called The Trade):
http://www.preferred.com/~pete/trade.htm

You do not necessarily have to trade WOV for WOV either. You will find that many traders will give you one tape of whatever you are looking for in exchange for two blank tapes. I even found one guy who gave me WOV stuff in exchange for my old Ultraman videos...

Also, (although this could be considered an official release) the Stan Ridgway dis-info page sells a video called Show Business is my Life that includes assorted live WOV stuff they dug up from god knows where... it costs about $30...

Hello all,

As past posts have noted, Marc is now in Department of Crooks with his
new partners in crime Sheldon Ferguson and Fred. For any of you in
doubt about Marc's contribution to the Wall of Voodoo sound, I suggest
you run, don't walk, to your nearest record store (or just surf over
to www.cdnow.com if that's easier) and pick up a copy of DoC's "Plan
9 From Las Vegas". While Sheldon and Fred give the music a fresh, new
twist, Marc's Wall of Voodoo roots are hanging out all over each track.
Just go buy it...you won't be disappointed.

Re: porn and other soundtracks

A few songs from Prieboy's first album can be heard on the soundtrack in a film called "Cutting Class" (a horror/comedy starring Brad Pitt, Martin Mull, etc.). However, on the credits at the end of the movie, I believe some of the songs are credited to W.O.V. even though they appear on Prieboy's solo album. I believe the songs were Man Talk, Nearer to Morning and another one not on the record (can't be sure though, haven't seen the film in a hell of a long time).

What does everyone here have against vinyl?? everyone wants happy planet and dark continent
on cd, whats wrong with records, especially for an early 80's band? aside from the copies of
both of these I own on record, I have seen numerous others on reocrd. Records, I have found,
have better low end, and excpet for the wear that comes from age, like scratches and pops,
which sound great for WoV, there's nothing wrong with them, plus they are easier to find.

P.S. I have to voice my opinion on the which era is better question. I say Stan's, even for
all his new found pompous attitude, you have to admit those years were better.
All's I have to say is Andy turned a bunch of laid back cowboys into glam rockers, what faster
way to kill a mockingbird??
p.p.s. to whoever wanst Granma's House on record, there is a store in Huntington Beach called
Vinyl Solution, they have like 10 copies of the first ep (from $2-$4) and 1 or 2 of Granma's House
for $10, along with all the other LP's.

Re: the porno movie thing

Allegedly, WOV did incidental music for b-movies (including pornos) before they cut any albums. People on this board have mentioned one or two films they did by name, though I forget the specific titles. If you are interested, you might want to scroll way down the board.

As for now, I have no idea if Marc has reverted back to doing that. I do know that Marc has a new band called Department of Crooks.

Hope that helps!

Longarm,

It is'nt just now that Stan is trying to take too much credit than
he deserves. One of the reasons he ceased to be in Wall of Voodoo was
because some of the other members were getting mad at him for saying
things like he started Wall of Voodoo when it was actually Bruce and
Marc who started the band. this ego trip definitly was not his first.

Lefty,

Thanks for all the info!

So, in essence, Stan *is* lying in his new interview. Damn! I hate to see Stan going off on an ego trip about WOV. Oh well.

The question I have is: why now? What's he got to gain from being ruthless about the other members of WOV? I think it would be a better thing to admit that he was open to others' ideas, and that it was an equal partnership, rather than say "I created that sound". Wouldn't he sound like a bigger man if he said the former? I just don't understand how some people's minds work.

Thanks again.

WHAT THE REST OF THE BAND WANTED TO DO.I WAS TALKING TO BRUCE

Hello all,

I have an idea I want to put to all of you here on the Open Forum.
Seems to me that quite a few of us would like to get together and
chat about Wall of Voodoo and, while this Open Forum page is a great
thing, waiting for more posts is nerve wracking. What I'd like to know
is if anyone would be interested in having a little get together on
IRC for a Wall of Voodoo summit meeting? I spend quite a bit of time
on IRC myself and at times have opened a WoV chat room. It would be
simple to set a date and time where anyone who's interested in talking
about the band can come and hang out and chat. If any of you would
like to be part of something like that, please email me and I can
start making plans to set it up. And I can also get any of you not
familiar with IRC set up quickly and easily so you can join in. Hope
to hear from alot of you soon!!

Okay, I can't for the life of me get to that Stan interview. The link doesn't work for me. But I'd like to discuss the whole "Stan was WOV" thing.

For myself--personally--I very much prefer WOV's Stan Ridgway era over the Andy Prieboy era. If Stan Ridgway wasn't a major part of the early WOV sound, then why did their sound change so drastically after he left? I'm not insinuating that Stan WAS Wall of Voodoo. The instrumentalists in WOV all contrubted to the sound greatly...Marc's wiry, atonal guitar licks, Joe's rickety percussion, Chas's wicked synths...even Bruce's subtle basslines. But it is clearly evident that WOV's writing style and sound changed after Stan left, thus leading me to assume that Stan was head writer. Compare "Call of the West" to "Seven Days in Sammytown" or "Happy Planet"! I think Stan's first solo album "The Big Heat" is closer to "Call" than any of the Prieboy stuff!

I think it's a similar situation to that of--say--Talking Heads. David Byrne is a genius...yet so are Jerry, Tina and Chris, in their own way. I think Stan is largely responsible for the early WOV sound, and perhaps this is merely writing-wise.

Now, I don't know what Stan said, because I can't link up to this bloody interview. In fact, I've never seen any interview with WOV. Was he ruthless and pompous or something? If he was, then I will probably regret coming to his defense. I do agree that he should give credit to his partners. But I had to throw my two cents in.

I think that one person in wall of voodoo had any idea what they were doing and

a big fan of Andy. I've never heard marc's stuff. And I don't know if
Chaz or any other member beyond who I've mentioned has done anything.
but I will always think that wall of voodoo was great!!!!!!!!!

I agree. Stan really needs a reality check if he thinks the load of
bull he shovelled in that interview was true. He didn't invent the
Wall of Voodoo sound. He contributed, no doubt about that, but without
Marc's guitars and Chas's genius with synthesizers, WoV would have
been just another new wave band.

Read the interview. Wow, even I know that some of that isn't fact. I read an
interview with WOV YEARS ago, when stan was in the band. And the stories
were not the same as the one on that websight. In NO WAY did Stan INVENT
the WOV sound. Give credit where credit is due Stan.

Click here to go read an interview with Stan Ridgway where he discusses leaving WOV.

Date: 08/01/97 07:41:17 PDT

Comments:
Given that Stan didn't release an album for five years after leaving Wall Of Voodoo, and given that while he's done well he hasn't duplicated the success of _Mexican Radio_ (not that he seems to be trying that hard), I don't think it's quite right to say he "sold out" WOV or that it was about money.

The explaination he lists for leaving WOV in his press releases (and on his website) is "the usual creative differences". I read some interviews with him, and it's clear he felt he was the driving creative force behind WOV, and he left because he was tired of butting heads with the rest of the band. He'd suggest something, get an indifferent or vaguely uninterested response from the band, and then spend a long time convincing them it was a good idea. I'll post the URL to the interview if I find it.

When I first heard the song "Far Side OF Crazy" I did not know the nane of the song or the band who sang it. I went to record store after record store reciting the song to the best of my knoweledge; but had no luck. I searched for six months and still nothing, then when one of my friends came back into town I i mentioned it in passing and the bastard knew who the Wall of Voodoo were and he figured out who I was talking about just by my bad singing. Ever since then I have been a big fan. Thanks Emanon.

Wow, a Wall Of Voodoo page so many years after the fact. I bought
Call of the West when I was in 11th grade and for six months that
was the only album I listened to. I literally wore it out - the tape
became so thin it broke. I just recently picked up a copy on CD and
was suprised to find that it didn't sound dated at all. Still an
awesome band! I used to have Dark Continent on vinyl, and I'm pretty
sure I had another one on vinyl, but I can't remember. I must say that
COTW was the one that really did it to me, though. It was like a drug,
I'd put the headphones on and suddenly I was in another world. Don't
think I've ever had a musical experience quite as intense. It's nice
to know there's other fans out there. When I was in high school it

Longarm,

Yes, they did do some film music, but I don't know the names of any of the other films. But if you ever do come across "Night Dreams" there's other music in it that sounds very Voodoo-ish though no music credits were given at the end of the film. Chas also did some music for the movie "C.H.U.D. 2". It's not a porno film, just a really stupid film :)

I read your post about "Dark Continent", but I bought two copies (one must always have an emergency back-up when possible) when it was first released on CD. I did the same thing with the "Index Masters" CD.

When I get any more news I'll post it. Hasta la vista!

Ms. Vieuxdo,

I was the one who made the inquiry about WOV doing porno films. Does your answer mean that they did indeed do music for those films, or that one of their songs just happened to crop up in a porno film?

Also, I won't be hunting that film down any time soon just to hear a WOV song. I'm not THAT interested.

Did you read my post on "Dark Continent"? CD Europe seems to have it.

Hello all,

Yes, I also have the Far Side of Crazy 12" with Dance You Fuckers (and also a studio version of Wrong Way To Hollywood) on the B-side. It's a great song and even better live. Also, in answer to another question I saw here, if you can find a copy of the x-rated film "Night Dreams" you will hear the Voodoo version of Ring of Fire played in the background of one scene.

I spoke to Chas last week and he cleared up the rumors that there might be a Wall of Voodoo reunion in Norway. Sorry to say it's not going to happen. The logistics of getting everybody together and organizing the whole thing was too complicated and they passed on the offer.

Chas also passed on info from Marc. Marc says the album he worked on recently should be out perhaps in a month or so. Some contract problems held up the release, but those should be worked out soon.

I also asked Chas to clear up the "It's a Dog's Life" stuff. There was never an official album by that title. If you have the liner notes for the Wall of Voodoo EP you'll see a reference to It's a Dog's Life with an address to write to. Chas said that was a name he, Marc and Stan had come up with for a fan club. Nothing much ever came of the fan club. I guess no one really had the time to get it up and running properly.

Last but not least, I got an email from Ned Leukhardt's bother a week or so ago. He says Ned has been playing drums on and off with a rock-a-billy band in Norway called Toni & the Tomcats. Ned and the band will be playing at a Norwegian-American festival in North Dakota sometime in August.

That's all the news that comes to mind right now. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Just wondering - anyone else have the 12" of 'Far Side of Crazy' with the
b-side 'Dance You Fuckers'? Really - that's what the track is called
and it happens to be pretty cool at that. I've mentioned it to other
WofV fans, but no one else has heard of it... brady_david@tandem.com
BTW, nice to see someone has *finally* put up a proper Wall of Voodoo
site. A few suggestions - get a proper discography going - start with
the already existing Stan R. stuff, but continue it into the Prieboy
era. Second - you might want to tone down the background image
a bit here on the forum - makes the white text hard to read.

I would love to have someone make a tape of Dances of Death and or the soundtrack to the Drywall Incident. I haven't been able to find either one of these, and would be happy to trade my rarities tape. Even if you think you have all the b-sides, I bet I have something new to trade. If interested, please email me at dalee@ohsu.edu. Thanks.

For the record... Joe Nanini- the original drummer went to a band
called Lonesome Strangers, Bruce Moreland went to a band called
War Diary before coming back to WOV for a second tour. With Chas and
Marc Moreland together again, what are the odds of a complete re-group
with Stan to finish what they started? Isn't it quite obvious that
Stan is going nowhere without Chas, Marc, Bruce, and Joe?

I first saw WOV in Austin, TX after Stan Ridgeway had left the band.
Some of the later albums were memorable but after the breakup it just didn't
have the same feel of something great/original. Stan did a few solo projects
which were not very worthwhile and resurfaced later as Drywall which I haven't
been able to find anywhere. WOV disapeared into oblivion. Bring em all back.
There was nothing like the morbid-cynical-parody of the original members.
I need more than 2 good albums from a band that had so much more left
to leave as a cut-short brilliant legacy.

I realize this isn't quite Wall Of Voodoo news (there probably isn't much these days), but fans of early WoV are probably Stan Ridgway fans as well. Anyway, here goes: Mosquitos and Partyball are going back into print! They've been out of print for a while now, and the only place to get new copies has been through the Stan Ridgway fan club. They should hit the stores May 27th.

They're being released by Geffen, which still has the rights to them, through the same manufacturer/distributor (Uni Distribution Group). Even though there's bad blood between Geffen and Ridgway, I guess Geffen isn't above making a little money off him. Still, it's good news for us fans.

Speaking of being out of print, it's true that Dark Continent is out of print, and the Stan Ridgway Dis-Info fan club is out of copies. Maybe someone should ask them how they feel about making copies of the CD for people who are jones'in for it somethin' fierce. You can still get The Index Masters and Call Of The West on CD through Dis-Info, as well as all of Stan's solo albums. They have a web page at
http://www.primenet.com/~drywall/

As for the ceramic dog statue--I was kind of bored recently, so I did a web search for "stan ridgway" on AltaVista and read all the pages that looked interesting. One of the things I found was an interview with Stan a couple of years ago, which actually discussed the dog. Stan seemed to hold the opinion that he was largely in the driver's seat for WoV's creative direction, and that was just one example. He bought the dog on some trip down to Tijuana, and said "hey, let's use it like a mascot", sort of wanting it to show up in the corners of everything that they did. He got some resistance from the band, but it wound up coming off pretty cool, now didn't it.

Regarding Dances Of Death and Grandma's House on CD: according to the Stan Ridgway discography at
http://reality.sgi.com/employees/relph/music/ridgway.stan/
Dances Of Death was only ever released on CD, and Grandma's House was only ever released on vinyl and cassette. That was the first I ever saw of Dances Of Death; I've certainly never heard it. Boy, I sure wouldn't mind if someone had a copy of that somewhere near a CD duplicator, and by sheer coincidence had my address nearby.

And Stan Ridgway always does some WoV live. He neverfails to do Mexican Radio, which is understandable as it's the biggest hit he's ever had, and I think he usually does Ring Of Fire. I've also seen him do Callbox, The Passenger, Call Of The West, and I think Long Arm and maybe even Red Light.

Finally, I also recommend Showbusiness Is My Life for WoV fans. For those of you too lazy to go read about it at the Dis-Info site, here's a list of all the WoV-specific contents:
Mexican Radio
Back In Flesh (live)
Call Box
Funzone (live, an unreleased WoV B-side track)
Ring Of Fire
Tomorrow / Ring Of Fire (I believe these were both from the same TV appearance--as such they have great sound quality)
This Way Out (live)
Can't Make Love (live)
Animal Day (live)
Probably the most startling thing about the set is how young Stan looked in the video for Callbox. It's a sort of dippy video, with WoV doing young-musicians-in-a-video things-- jumping around, staring across the camera's field of view speaking, banging on instruments a little, lounging in front of the camera. Maybe like an eary They Might Be Giants video with less energy.

Speaking of jones'in, all this talk of WoV has gotten me on another COTW single-song repeat.

Regarding the lyrics page;

Although the index masters and dark continent songs are listed, only the
happy planet, seven days in sammystown and the call of the west lyrics are up.
The others are on the way. If you want to contribute them they will appear sooner.

This web site has been developed using MS internet explorer and it looks
alot better using MSIE than netscape. I will endeavor to have the site
look the same using either browser in the future.

Because many people have been having a hard time with the lyrics page it

I highly recommend the Stan Ridgway videotape "Showbusiness is My Life."
It's a great mix of new and old videos. I just bought "The Drywall
Incident" video and it's pretty cool, too. There's a new CD out called
"Film Songs" that is very worth having--I think the company I got it
from is called Silver Moon Records, located in Tulsa, Okla. Stan recently
played here in San Francisco and it was a pretty good show. Not quite
as energetic as the shows I saw in LA in the mid-80s, but what are
you going to do? It was still fun. Lastly, I recommmend Hecate's Angels;
Pietra Wexstun, who plays with Stan, is the singer/songwriter for Hecate's
and I can't get enough of this album. It's available from Birdcage
Records, which you can access through the Stan Ridgway dis-info pages.
Hecate's Angels songs are haunting, beautiful and humorous.

4. The WoV dog was sorta an official mascot, bought on a whim in
Tijuana, which the band carried around with them. I think Blackboard
Sky is a great song too... cheers, Rhys. rhm96@aber.ac.uk

Cool site! I've been a fan of Stan's WOV since hearing COTW 4 or 5 years ago. That and DC are so damn good. Judging from 'Urrggh!', they must have been unbeatable live. Does anyone out there have any live video or audio of Stan's WOV to sell? Let me know.

I HAVE A COPY OF THE BIG CITY SINGLE AS WELL. I BOUGHT IT IN CALIFORNIA YEARS AGO, IT IS MUCH MUCH BETTER THAN THE VERSION ON SAMMYS TOWN, BUT I WANT A CD OF DARK CONTINENT

You're not the only one who owns that single with a different version
of "Big City" on it. A friend of mine owns it and refuses to part with
it, so I only possess it on tape. Just wanted you to know you're not
the only one who's heard it :)

I hate to sound stupid, but--- What the hell is up with that dog sculpture thing? Sure, it's cool kistch, but does it have any significance? And does anyone else think Blackboard Sky is great?
