Start the NEW YEAR off with a bang! Go to the mall!!!

Find a CHRISTIAN BOOK STORE & share the warmth. Here's how:

1. when you go in start blowing kisses to the person behind the counter. Does not matter the sex, just matters how brave you are.

2. hold up a cross & yell to the manager "hey, you got K.Y. JELLY for this thing?"

3. put on the headphones in the audio section & start singing STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN. It does not matter if it is in key or not.

4. Go up to the manager & ask what the W.W.J.D. stuff stands for. When he tells you it stands for WHAT WOULD JESUS DO, say this "WHAT WOULD JESIS DO? I GUESS HE WOULD COME IN HERE WITH A WHIP & DRIVE ALL OF YOU OUT OF HERE. tHAT'S WHAT HE DID TO THE LAST PEOPLE THAT TRIED TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF HIS NAME." (this will usually be the best to do last, as they should throw you out after that one.

5. Of course, and the most important of all, everyone have a great NEW YEAR & hope that STAN, ANDY & most of all MARC give us some new music in the coming year. Get well MARC!!!

Wondering when the memebers of WALL OF VOODOO became GOOD GUYS? I mean come on... They sang about lowlifes & no-lifes. From Stan singing about a mad bomber in THE PASSENGER to Andy singing about shooting Reagan in FAR SIDE OF CRAZY. If you wanted a "feel Good" band, listen to WHAM. Remember, these guys made a Christmas song called SHOULDN'T HAVE GIVEN HIM A GUN FOR CHRISTMAS. If they were villians, we didn't care. We admire the band for the music. We will not stop liking them because of a personal problem. In fact, I am betting no one on this forum would turn their backs on MARC because of this.

GET WELL MARC! We need more music from you.

Here are some things you can do
this holiday season:

1. Put gasoline in the fireplace. BIG SURPRISE!
2. Eat the Santa cookies and leave him a femur and a glass of goat's blood.
3. Let scorpions loose in stockings.
4. Eat Candy! Your's and everyone else's.
5. Place pet zombie in front of tree, tell him to eat anyone with a white beard and red hat.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

I am stunned that someone would come on the forum trying to claim a debt (if this is true). Nice response Ms. V and Master Mazda! Of course if Marc ever needed a hand, we could all pitch in and help out. A little payback for all he is done for us! God bless you Marc! You kick ass!!

I'm with Ms. V on this one Schultz. Ms. V took your original complaint seriously enough to forward messages. The fact that a very sick man wasn't able to get back to you quickly seems to have turned you into an barely attractive whiner. It's never good when a debt or loan is not repaid but the fact is that this forum is not the time or the place for your whingeing. I can also testify to the fact that Marc is neither rich nor is he well enough to be able to respond to you in the present time. Furthermore to claim that Marc is not worthy of fame is ludicrous....think about it Jon, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is littered with screw ups, jailbirds, sexual deviants and sleazebags............VIVA ROCK AND ROLL!!!!!!!!!

Well Jon, I think you can pretty much figure that, since Marc is facing a liver transplant, he's not going to have any money to send you or anyone else no matter how much you whine about it. I tried to be polite in my email to you, but since you chose to be rude in the Open Forum, let me tell you (and anyone else who assumes the guys in the band have lots of money hanging around) a thing or two. In your email you said "I was surprised, then, in December '95 to read an article in the L.A. New Times which said he had been recently touring the country with Johnette Napolitano - and probably making a good deal of money." Sorry to shatter your dreams, but he didn't make "a great deal of money." Very few people do unless they're in a commercially successful band. What small amount of money he may have had is long gone for medical bills. While I could sympathize with your situation before, I don't any longer. Trying to make someone look like a villain because of an almost 10 year old debt sounds more like an attempt at extortion than anything else. None of us are perfect and I'm sure we've all done things we're not proud of, you included, Jon. And since you've so obviously cast the first stone, don't be surprised if you get lots of stones thrown back at you. It's a shame you couldn't have handled it in a better way. You might have found Marc's friends and fans more willing to help if you had.

Marc Moreland ripped me off. I lent him $500 in 1993 and he was going to pay me back in monthly payments, which he never sent.

I informed him a few months ago, through email forwarded to him by Ms. Vieuxdo of this site, that I'm in terrible shape now and need the money very badly - but he's chosen not to respond.

He isn't anyone worthy of fame in my book.

I am new here & just want to know if anyone knows whether Marc has recovered from his illness. I heard "Funzone" for the first time the other day, (KILLER tune) and I really got kinda depressed about Joe and all. I have a pretty cool, kinda small, but rapidly growing feature on W.O.V. at my site. Hello VOODOO folks - I feel compelled to tell you of someone that had a great influence on the work...heard or not...but it was there.

I am sad today because a kind and great musician and truly evolved
human being has passed away. George Harrison was simply a
brilliant person, born of truly unusual period in culture, and
really had scoped out the truth on things in this world, as I see
it, and lived it with no apoligies.

He always exibited a very sly and inside sense of humour about the
world, and was not concerned with the staus qou, (liberal or
conservative) which I appreciated as a listener of his art, was
musical and soulful always, and never took his fame to heart.

It was his way to deflect all that and just try and be real in a
world of lies... I wish I could have met him once and told him so
and said thanks for the music and all and everything he pushed out
to the world.

He also championed a number of outside films and poeple that maybe
never would have gotten made without his help.

A very rare person indeed for our generation, (the forty
somethins') and I'll miss his take on things as the world turns.
Too soon George...you've left a great legacy that all artists are
and will inspired by. You took the risks in art and life and love,
and I can only respect and admire you as someone my friends and I
felt close too. We'll miss you and it's a little more lonely
here..

Rest in Peace GH

Stan

Got it... heard it... and, in Stan's words, it's "a monument to music"! Good performance... good sound (right off the board!). Just like being there... you can almost smell the ribeye and the baked potatos from The Strand's kitchen!

Those of you who have listened to the live tracks in Liquid Audio on the Anatomy CD... they are from the Strand show... so that'll give you a taste of what's on the double live CD. Of course, the CD sound is better than the Liquid Audio sound...

25 copies is not a lot... cdbaby says thay are awaiting more stock...?

As The World Turns: (Last week's episode) All was not well in the wonderful world of Voodoo. Gone was the touchy-feelie-lovey-dovey fellowship that we all enjoy. Well the world was shaken, but it was not shattered.

Having a connection with both Chris and The King (and knowing Chris was going to be gone for a while) I've been acting as self appointed peace maker. Part one is completed. Yesterday I received a collection of Prieboy demo songs on a CDR called "Heaven or Anaheim" for Chris. This was an Ebay sale conducted between a family member of King Richard and my internet buddy in France. If Chris doesn't get the thing now-it is all MY FAULT! For the official record, this disc seemed to arrive much faster than some of the music I purchase via EBAY. Got to give credit where credit is due.

It would seem that we are well on our way restoring the natural order of things.

Be sure to tune in next week when you can hear me say "hey I got the rest of your stuff today. As soon as I'm done copying all of this for myself, I'll send it right over."

Regards,
JC

oops!
I remembered seeing W.O.V. 2 at the palace in hollywood,
and they used the juno,so I figured I'd be the smart guy
and look where it got me.I'm glad we have the ACTUAL person
that forged the sound to set the record straight, otherwise
people would be able to make up whatever they wanted!

I seem to recall seeing The Lonesome Strangers at that palace show.
That's when Joe was with them.Does anyone remember seeing them?It had to be
'88 or '89.

Anyway, thanks Stan,I'll do more research next time!
Alex

Date: 11/19/01 10:51:24 PST

Comments:
dear alex-
re: ring of fire synth question (da da da da da da da etc...)
well no...it was a mini moog, one of the very first ones made. We never had a juno.
the sound was made by plugging in a oberhiem 8 voice sequencer box to the back of the mini moog the wrong way in for such a device. we would buy various differebnt adaptors at radio shack and try to literally "blow up" the instrument to see what would happen. one day i came into our WOV offices on hollywood blvd. and bruce had been up all night and said hey stan listen to this, and stuck a key on the moog. Whoa! too much!

I knew we had to harness this sound somehow but to what? Just to kinda play with it a bit and not get too complicated, i thought of Ring of Fire, and song i loved and had played in a few cowboy bars, and mostly cuz it was just three chords and was easy for all of us to play right away. As it developed, we all got all got pretty excited and Marc got the lick down for the trumpet line but switched the intervals from major to minor, and also added his wonderful "godzilla" feedback on the end with his trusty mxr blue box. the melody at the end on the organ was me playing the "our man flint" theme but disguising it with a few new twists. we made a couple of demos of this on my Sony TC 630 2 track tape recorder, a very cool piece i'd used to record with even before Voodoo...all our early demos were made on this machine. I'd pin pong the parts from track 1 to track 2 and back and forth till the compression built up and it really slammed! gee i kinda miss that old piece of junk..

later on in this period, Chas Gray joined the band and he played the moog part while Bruce switched to electric piano. Joe joined sometime after this too, but this one was birthed with just me Marc and Bruce as I recall..

one thing more about this is that whenever we played live with this song, we had to hook up the moog the same way with the various "wrong" plugs and cords and the extremely funky and volatile oberhiem 8 voice..and it was always just about to fuck up or fall out of sync or be out of tune or play way to fast... or just plain blow up...all of us had a lot of anixety when we performed this but i guess that kinda helped its tone and atmosphere in a way. it made it pretty exciting to perform cuz you never knew if it would just stop dead and we'd all be standing there trying to look cool with egg on our face. On stage it got pumped out by a big 400 watt Peavy 18" bass cabinet.

oh well thought i'd stroll down memory lane and fill in the facts as i remember them.

replace all parts with long arm -

stan ridgway

Ok let's stop arguing...
I finally retrieved what you were supposed to send to me.
You were paid $118.5 on march 14th 2001 from bidpay.
The problem is that, in the mean time, I thought that you vanished and
got part of this stuff from another contact. (Not my fault isnt'it ? 8 months is a pretty long time ). That's why, if you're ok, I will ask to Jim, my american friend to choose any other wov stuff we don't already own.

FYI : I also retrieved the reference of our "trade" at Bidpay.com

4014179 Money Order in the amount $118.50 to RICH CARTER for Video wall of voodoo bought at eBay auction on Wednesday,14 March 2001.

Basically I won a video on E-bay for $20 (around...I don't remember exactely) and you offered me more stuff (cd's) for more money by e-mail : that's why the amount is higher than the bid.

Also tired to argue, but I'm not sure you have to feel angry.

Chris

Of course, as you "don't remember me" I will send you a snapshot of the bidpay screen via e-mail (kingofeightiesmusic@angelfire.com if it works).

From Chris to the King R: Not very ease to clarify, my english is poor but

There are two possibilities : 1st King Richard is Rich Carter from Nashville and I DO confirm you fucked me, you owe me a lot of stuff.
(You previously said you got problems and you were temporarily not able to send anything, I have a lot of e-mails from you and maybe from bidpay as a proof). The seller of the last stuff I won from E-bay is Mrs Carter from Nashville. Not your wife ??? How many Carter are Wov fans and Wov rare stuff sellers in Nashville ??? Stop kidding me, please !

: 2nd King Richard is NOT Rich Carter from
Nashville and I do apologize for the confusion ( But It should be a terrific mistake, I'd double check with an american friend of mine who confirmed he actually is )

Happy now ? Do you want me to publish your old e-mails ?

Message to Mr Carter : I don't care my (about) $125, maybe you actually got problems last March, maybe you were honest (a long time ago) but I do HATE your current attitude : To pretend to forget me.
If you really didn't screw me voluntarily, maybe you're not a real thief, but now you are a compulsive liar !

KING RICHARD HERE.
No howdy, just HELLFIRE.

this is for CHRIS. I take it that you are the same one who made the claim that I ripped you off a month or so ago on this forum. I was so shocked by the claim that I have not responded or posted since that time. That ends right now.

In your last post. you say that you are afraid someone is my wife & that she will rip you off?

You do not know my wife.
My 2 children or my cat.

How DARE YOU talk about a family member of mine, and of all things, PUBLICLY on a forum for all to see.

So. Let's cut the bull shall we? As I know of, I NEVER rip people off & I have a line of people on this forum to back that up. But who cares.

You don't I am sure.

So the only way to clear my name is to do this publicly on the forum, just as you have. You have a friend who is getting a cd for you? ok, let's fill up his mailbox, shall we? You post on this forum his address for the cds to go to & I mail him some cds for you. When they are mailed, I will publicly post on this forum, for all to see that they are on there way. I EXPECT your friend to post on here when they arrive.

So, "KING RICHARD owes you", huh? so you tell me... What is it that I owe you? the names of the discs if you please. write them on this forum.

By the way, ever think that I may not be the guy who ripped you off. Someone claiming to be me took your money & ran & all you have is a name? I am the only KING RICHARD that I know, but if you look back in the archives, others have claimed to be me in posts. Ask JT sometime about the guy claiming to have posters & using my name. I do not care about proof or any other bull. I don't want or need proof. I want this to end. I want this to end NOW.

So you tell me what you are owed... Tell us ALL what you are owed.

So when you do get these, or your friend gets these, I want MY NAME cleared. If you have any questions, send them to my email:

kingofeightiesmusic@angelfire.com

I ain't goin' anywhere & you have nothing to lose.

Oh yeah, never EVER say anything about a member of someones family. We WALL OF VOODOO fans play nice.

K.R.

thanks Chris,

I actually did come across the address so your stuff is on the way. Congrats on picking up another WOV disc. I think you're ok if you give them my address. On their items they usually say that they don't ship overseas so you are probably better off routing it through me anyway. Of course the fact that I'll get a copy out of it sounds like an even better deal! thanks buddy.

I got an email from your best friend yesterday and I believe I'm going to come out OK so naturally I'll forward some more on your way as well. Hope all is going well. I've added your new email address so we should be good for now. Take care.

Hello all,

I got an email from Marc's wife yesterday and here's the scoop.

He is back home (his home in France, that is) at long last, though he still has to go back to the hospital for visits once a week. His tests are all done and he's now on a waiting list for a liver transplant. Hallelujah! Even though he'll still have a long way to go to recovery after he gets the transplant, at least there is light at the end of the tunnel. Keep up all the good thoughts and positive vibes that you've all be sending his way for the past year. Every little bit helps!

As for the release of his latest CD, "Take it to the Spotlight", it's mostly done except for the artwork. Keep your fingers crossed for a release relatively soon. It will still be released by Kitchen Whore Records (www.KitchenWhore.com) so you can keep and eye on their web site if you like. I'm looking forward to hearing the music!

That's the bare necessities for now. Have a good one.

Rock On,
Ms. Vieuxdo

Dear Mazda (Professor Emeritus of Comedy at NYUK University)

That enormous thud I just heard had to be the sound of you running into the 'wall' of voodoo while back peddling away from your comments.

I see now, those were jokes! You are a very funny guy. I got the references but thank you for reminding me. Sorry to say that I found them neither very humorous nor particularly clever. Given the enormity of your comedic potential and your keen sense of comedic timing I'm surprised that a man with your sense of humor would leave 'The Passenger' out there for some other genius to run with. Too bad you missed that one, we would have been rolling with laughter.

"after reagan it was difficult to believe that any american president could outdumb him but GWB just took things to another level. YEAH>>>>LOWER, you have my deepest sympathy...MAZDA"

this comment is pretty funny too, more of your humor I suppose. I guess producing a record 20 years ago gives you some incredible insight into world events. Keep up the good work and keep the laughs a coming. I know you won't let me down.

Schmuck? Moi? OK that is pretty funny coming from you. Thanks again.

Toby here again-

Speaking of totally useless mindless dribble, I found two secret Voodoo demos embedded in the soundtrack to Rinse Dreams Untamed Cowgirls Of The Wild West: Part 2 Jammy Glans From The Rio Grand. During the Tami Monroe and Jeanna Fine lesbian scene, there are two songs played that are credited to Bonnies Boys. I played them for Andy and he told me that one of them was a demo for Marc's half of Elvis Bought Dora A Cadillac. It is the begining guitar part. He had the second half of the song, so they took the two halfs and Frankenstien'ed them together. The other song is something called Granma Wins At Bingo and it was a song that Marc was going to give to Miles Copeland for this album he was doing called Guitar Gods or something like that. it's totally wacky. Miles hated it and so it never made it in. Andy didn't know anything about why these songs were in the movie. Bruce was hanging out with Steve Sadiyan (Rinse) at the time and probably worked on the set or something. I think at the time that these movies were done, Marc was in France, but Bruce could have given him a tape. BTW Bonnie is their mothers name. I'm gonna check part one to see if there are any other gems there.

Richard, what a scathing comment!!! This is a bulliten board about the music of Wall Of Voodoo, and not a global world politcal views discussion. I'm not sure were you are right now in the world, but here in America we've had so much coverage of the war, and telethons, and benifit concerts, and pledge drives, and tearful remembrances, and charity singles, and american flag stickers, and American flag hats, and American flag beer cozies, and just about anything else you can slap an American flg on to jack up the price of, that we are pretty sick of it all. We all need a break from the horrors of the world that we live in. If we all dwelled on it for as long as they all want us to, we would all just slit our wrists. It's not that we don't care or are concerned about the state of the world, but we can't be freedom fighters every waking hour. My cape is back at the cleaners getting dry cleaned!

Dear Professor Mazda,

It's time that you consider that most folks are able to deal with more than one issue at a time.

"Well...............it's good to see that WOV fans are more concerned with how much some obscure video with poor sound costs than the fact that the ugly americans are really running the dog and pony show now."

More concerned? It's possible to concerned AND knowledgeable about world events while at the same time going about the business of life. That you can only do one thing at a time is more of a condemnation of your abilities than anything else.

It's more than a bit ironic, given your comments that you seem to have to time troll bulletin boards. Get a life.

there is also a vinyl copy of Red Tower on ebay. and that is what everyone should be checking out! It is extremely rare and had a lot more than the six tracks listed on there. It's an Andy era show from West Berlin in 1986. A great show.... And it's on vinyl! The audience starts heckling them right before Wrong Way To Hollywood and they retort back only to find out that the hecklers are Americans.

What's up with the guy selling Dance Of Death for 40 pounds?!? Does he really think someone will pay that?

I've been a big Wall of Voodoo fan for years. I remember wearing out my cassette copy of Dark Continent not long after found it in a bargain bin at a record store. My introduction to them was the video for Mexican Radio and This Way Out from Urgh! A Music War.. Joe Nanini's inventive percussion, Stan's unique lyrics, and the Morelands guitar style blew me away. Not many people I've met really know anything about WoV, except for Mexican Radio which is a shame really because WoV are one of the best bands of the early/mid 80's.

The album CALL OF THE WEST is in my top three CD's. I've listened to it since I had the cassette 14 years ago (and I wish there was a CD pressing with added "There's Nothing On This Side" and "Exercise".) Dark Continent is another favorite, as well as THE UGLY AMERICANS live album - simply brilliant. HAPPY PLANET and the acommpanying very odd "Do It Again" video promo were a disspointment. I've enjoyed the songs "Tomorrow" "Call Of The West" and the amazing "Lost Weekend" since I was a teenager. I have hopes that bands can bring back the songwriting and bountiful lyrcis as we had from the Moreland's, Prieboy, and Ridgeway.

Hi, there is a petition available at http://www.flora.org/coat/appeal that calls for a less violent response to the terrorism. Yeah sure it would be great to bomb wherever until they retaliate with nerve gas or bombs at some US mall or school somewhere, then we really bomb them and they really bomb us back and what's left after that? A bunch of ashes and 4 billion people with radiation poisoning.

The terrorism that targeted the US last week was beyond horror. But the president may only be guaranteeing that we get more of that with his gun ho "smoke em out" response, unless he smokes em out to have them prosecuted. It's not ok to toss bombs at a bunch of civilians just because they did it to us. The Taliban has just committed their only act of humanity in that they let their severely oppressed women (and children) out of Afghanistan rather than risk their exposure to military threat. We need to respond but it is possible to do it appropriately and not just piss all countries off by bombing the heck out of the middle east.

Song from "The The" aka Matt Johnson 1989 :

Armageddon Days Are Here (Again)
Are you ready for Jesus?
Uh huh
Buddha?
Yeah
Muhammad?
Ok
Well, I like this
Let's Go

They're 5 miles high as the crow flies
Leaving vapour trails against a blood red sky
Moving in from the East towards the West
With Balaclava helmets over their heads, yes

But if you think that Jesus Christ is coming
Honey you've got another thing coming
If he ever finds out who's hi-jacked his name
He'll cut out his heart and turn in his grave

Islam is rising
The Christians mobilising
The world is on its elbows and knees
It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds

It's war, she cried
It's war, she cried
This is war
Drop your possessions all you simple folk
You'll fight them on the beaches in your underclothes
You'll thank the good Lord for raising the Union Jack
You'll watch the ships sail out of harbour
And the bodies come floating back
Watch the ships sail out of harbour
And the bodies come floating back

But if you think that Jesus Christ is coming
Honey you've got another thing coming
If he ever finds out who's hi-jacked his name
He'll cut out his heart and turn in his grave

Islam is rising
The Christians mobilising
The world is on its elbows and knees
It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds

"Get the gun, get the gun, get the gun"
"Stay away from the gun, stay away from the gun"

If the real Jesus Christ were to stand up today
He'd be gunned down cold by the CIA
Oh, the lights that now burn brightest behind stained glass
Will cast the darkest shadows upon the human heart
But God didn't build himself that throne
God doesn't live in Israel or Rome
God doesn't belong to the yankee dollar

Some XTC song lyrics to ponder (originally about the Northern Ireland dilemma, but it still applies in current context):

Terrorism - by Andy Partridge

Terrorism
You're writing your diary in innocents' blood
You're vain and you're ugly, you're no Robin Hood
You don't steal from the rich to help the poor
You just take life from both and what is more
You break your bread and drink
But post-confession you'll still stink of
Terrorism

Terrorism
But you're Sikh, Jew, Muslim, and Christian, you say?
Now which religion will you wear today?
And in whose Bible do you find your cause
That says bomb children in department stores?
I hope your god is pleased
To see all creation on their knees for
Terrorism

Terrorism
Angel of death with black woolen mask
Freedom they bring you is a long wooden cask
They never doubt that right is on their side
When that right is rifle-shaped where can you hide?
Don't want daughter sweet
To be target practice in the High Street
Terrorism

God bless all who lost their lives in this horrible tragedy, and their loved ones left behind to cope somehow...

WE could wipe alot out but then we'd be like them and then what?...this is how world wars begin. let's look at some history. I'm as angry as anyone is over this but maybe we should be more stealth and secret about our KILLING of unwanted, demented fanatics, which is what they are.

America AND the free world is a place that was founded and continues with the idea of tolerance to all and religious freedom. What we are dealing with now is a strain of humanity that does not want to belong to that idea or concept. And they want us gone because we are "the other"...sci -fi? you bet!

Toby here -
I forwarded the Eye Protection question to Andy and he replied and asked me to post it here so here it goes:

> Hello Andy,
> I gotz a question... it was asked on the WOV.com board... who sang lead on
> Take Her Where the Boys are besides you? Or was it only you? It doesn't
> all sound like you. And also, was your brother Joe in Eye Protection?

Hello Toby,

Joe was not in Eye Protection.Joe created a number of posters for us, along
with Eye Pro drummer David Dean. Some of Joe's work can be seen in a book
called "Street Art" and another in Rock Art, or Art Rock, or Rock n' Art, or
Rockin Art or some variation of that oxymoron.

Joe also managed us in between our sociopathic first mananger, and the
fuckin'idiot who produced Take Her Where the Boys Are.

That's a very good question about the dual voices on Take Her. Whoever asked
has good ears.
The truth isn't as good.
In fact, it's moronic.

To make a long story short: The idiot producer insisted I "fix" my vocals
at the same time I had a lung and throat infection.
So,there are indeed two voices. One healthy....and one sick.

I don't want to infringe on WoV.coms hospitality or patience. I sent the
long version of the Take Her Where The Boys Are story to Jazzcrowd, where I
think it might be of more interest.

Talk to you soon.

Please pass on my thanks for all the love and support WoV.com continues to
give Marc. It really means a lot to him, and does him a world of good.

Yours,

AP

Hey, I have a few comments for VH1 and all those dirtbags in their suits who think that Wall Of Voodoo was nothing but a worthless, no talent 80's band. First off, VH1 had the Top 80 Of The 80's on today. I figured hell, maybe this show will be good, and who knows? Maybe Wall Of Voodoo will show up on the countdown. How could I have been so stupid? I should have known the idiots at VH1 wouldn't have known good music from the sound of a vaccume cleaner!! I was so ticked that Wall Of Voodoo's masterpiece, "Mexican Radio" did not make the countdown. But hey, I wasn't really shocked, knowing that all that boy-band and wannabe pop rockers filled their airwaves. And get this, they actually chose Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again" to be on the countdown! (Laughs histerically.)

How could they deny that Wall Of Voodoo was the GREATEST band of the 80's? And if anyone disagrees with that statement, let me tell you why I think they are the greatest band of the 80s, and I think some posters on here will agree...

1. Their sound is always fresh, exciting, interesting, and fun to listen to. Especially back in the days with old Stan. His tongue-in-cheek and demented writing style still intrigues me today!

2. The band members themselves were the kind of guys you could go have a few drinks with, laugh with, and never get tired of. Stan Ridgway with his ability to play guitar, keyboards, and harmonica, do lead vocals, and still come up with great tunes made him one of the most gifted and talented people I have ever known. Chas T. Gray with his incredible keyboard and synthesizer ability, bass guitar ability, and backing vocals made him truly stand out. He was always the most mysterious one in the group, which makes me wish we could have known more about him. Marc Moreland with his tastfully gritty guitar is something you could only get from Wall Of Voodoo. Good ol' Joe Nanini, may he rest in piece. His unique style of transforming ordinary pots and pans into effective percussion instruments truly made him shine. Get this, The Police began copying Joe by using pots and pans after watching Wall Of Voodoo at a concert. And Bruce, was there for only a short time, but his grumpy bass lines will always live on forever in our hearts! And that my friends, is why Wall Of Voodoo is the greatest band ever!

Thanks for reading!

A True Wall Of Voodoo Fan!

Cute Toby. I am serious though. I have the Montezuma Was A Man Of Faith CD, and ...Upon My Wicked Son on CD and LP. Both which have the lyrics in the booklet. Thanks to my brother-in-law a couple/few years back I foolishly lent them out to him. He loved the Wicked Son
album.. and I being the generous guy I am, and wanting to spread the word of Andy to as many as possible let him borrow BOTH CDs. Well he was only supposed to be gone for a month (he lives in FL) and he was up for a visit with his Wife during Thanksgiving. Christmas he promised to be back. 1 month without Andy I thought would be okay. Little did I know that 1 month would turn into 1 year and 1 month. Between that time he LOST the Montezuma EP but managed to keep the case. Wicked Sin has the scatch from hell. It nearly brought tears to my eyes. One can actually quite easily see thru the scratch. The CD coating is scratched right through. He made up for it buy getting mea copy of Sins Of Our Fathers. He warned that I probally would not like it because it didn't have the same sound. And he was right, at first. Being quite upset and not liking change too much I ignored it (did I mentioned it was dubbed on tape? yuck). Eventually I allowed myself to listen through the whole CD and realised what a truly great album it was. When This Dream Is Over grew on me first then When The Heart Awakes. Build A Better Garden and Boobjob Followed shottly after and with them I manged to sit through then all of Psycho Ex where as I usually hit fast forward. I couldn't believe I would skip this one. It was hilarious. Anyways after this point the whole album was soon my favourite work of Andy's be it solo or with Wall Of Voodoo.

Enough of the bitter-sweet trauma I have endured though. The matter at hand is the lyrics. Suffer me no more please. Look, I am on my knees begging here. Let's see, yup that look's good... see my puppy dog eyes? I am looking as pitiful as possible. 8`(
Ooh, is that a tear? Why yes, it is. Boy do I like sad. Oh the humanity!

:^) [if anyone can fulfill my request I would be most appreciative]

Speaking of Andy, I finally heard Take Her To Where The Boys Are. That is quite a catchy tune. Who sings lead in that though? From what I understand, Eye Protection is Both Andy and his brother Joe.
I listen to that quite regularly now. It's a MP3 though so I listen to it on the computer only as I havn't a burner. What I collection though got a few MP3's, Cassettes, CDs and LPs. The CDs being the only thing I can listen to while I drive my truck as the Cassette play is screwed, but I managed to get a CD/cassette adapter to work so I can here my CDs. My Wall Of Voodoo/Prieboy cassettes I listen to in the wife's car. And the LP's on my stereo. The few Mp3's I have I listen to while I surf.

One day, I hope to have everything On CDs.

Hello all,

Someone posted asking what the Voodoo-dudes have been doing to make a living since the band broke up. Well, here's what I know.

Andy Prieboy: Andy has been very busy over the years. He's put out a couple excellent solo CDs and is now working on getting his musical play "White Trash Wins Lotto" back to a New York stage...or should I be so bold as to say get it on Broadway? If you want to learn more about the details of "White Trash Wins Lotto", visit the excellent http://whitetrashwinslotto.homestead.com/start.html web site. There is also a Yahoo mailing list devoted to Andy. You can join at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JazzCrowd.

Ned Leukhardt: Last I'd heard, Ned's in a really cool Norwegian rock-a-billy band called Toini and the Tomcats. I have one of their CDs called "Going Wild". You can get it at Hepcat Records, http://www.hepcat.com/.

Chas Gray: Chas now works building sets for movies. He's worked on such films as The Fabulous Baker Boys, Batman and that Grinch movie with Jim Carrey.

Marc Moreland: Since WoV broke up Marc's kept making music. If you don't have his Department of Crooks CD he made in collaboration with his wife Frederique and Sheldon Ferguson you're missing something spectacular. The CD is called "Plan 9 from Las Vegas". You can find out more about it on my web site at http://www.geocities.com/vieuxdo/crooks.htm.

Bruce Moreland: Bruce has been the most elusive Voodoo-dude to pin down, at least for me. I know he's been in a few bands since the demise of WoV, but I don't recall the names of any of them and I don't know if any of the bands have released CDs. His mother tells me he's in good health and had recently been doing some construction work in the San Francisco Bay area.

Did I get everybody? I think so. Hope this satisfies at least a little of the curiosity. Hasta la vista!

Rock on,
Ms. Vieuxdo

Ned,

I hate to tell you this, but I got one of those emails supposedly from you with a virus attached. It looks like your computer may be infected with the W32.Sircam.Worm@mm worm. You (and everyone else) can get more information on it at http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sircam.worm@mm.html. There is also a cure for it there that you can download.

For anyone else who's gotten this thing, DO NOT open the attachment that came with it. Just delete the entire thing. And don't blame Ned for the problem. If it is indeed coming from his computer, he had no clue what was happening because the worm sends itself without the "host" knowing it.

Well, I guess I have to 'fess up, raise my hand and say "Um, I'm Ms. Vieuxdo." I'm not sure what it is you want to know about me, but thanks for saying I seem super great. I'm really just a normal (well, maybe not all THAT normal) person who's been a Wall of Voodoo fan since very close to the beginning of the band. I lived in Los Angeles back then and just kinda got sucked into a friendship with the guys after being introduced to them in the early 80's. And now here I am, nearly 20 years later, still enjoying the music and trying to age at lest semi-gracefully. I don't know if that answers the "Who is..." question, but it's the best I can do. And now, having said all that, on this Labor Day holiday weekend, the fish (and I) are on vacation...

Hello all,

Just wanted to post a quick note to let you all know that Edward of Nervous Gender still has a few of those CDs left of the guys in Wall of Voodoo backing Nervous Gender. I got one myself and I'd forgotten how cool the music was! The CD's got 8 tracks of the Nervous
Gender "Live at the Roxy" show and 1 track from the Variety Arts Center show all of which include Marc, Bruce, Ned and Chas, with Joe appearing on the Variety Arts Center cut. It costs a mere $25, which includes postage, and you can get it from Edward by emailing him at Nervousgender@yahoo.com. Speaking strictly for myself, I'm glad I've got one because it brings back good memories. Get one while they last!

Hello all,

Sorry it's been so long since I've posted an update on Marc, but there hasn't been all the much to report. At this point it's just a lot of tests and a lot of waiting. But I got an update from Frederique, Marc's wife, while I was out of town. I'm finally home and caught up enough on everything else to compose a post. Most of what follows comes as an edited copy & paste from what Freddy told me, edited for conciseness so this post doesn't run on forever. Here goes!

Marc has been transferred to another hospital, the one where his surgeon is and where the surgery will take place, so he can complete the last few necessary tests for the transplant list. He's tired and feels weak most of the time, but doing ok considering, and he's happy to be in this hospital (if he has to be in one at all) cause it's really good and has the reputation of being the best for liver transplants.

Freddy continues to give him emails I pass on to her and the stuff from the open forum here and he's always happy to read them, though he feels bad not being able to write back and thank the people who send them. He wants you all to know that he appreciates everything you've all said and sent and is thankful for all the friends and fans who've taken the time to wish him well.

Also, Marc's new solo CD is getting closer and closer to release from Kitchen Whore Records and I'll keep you posted on that as things develop.

I think that's about it for this update. Thanks to one and all for all you've done to make Marc's ordeal a little more bearable!

The rockabily version of "Mexican Radio" can be found only on the WOV Horror Demo Tapes from the late 1970's. They are frequently for sale on Ebay and usually run no less than $25.00. I have the tape and the quality is pretty poor (expected). The funny thing is is that WOV sounds on par with any other decent LA punk band on those recordings. Stan's voice is very strange.

"my drug buddy" is from the movie "FLOUNDERING" dir. by Peter Macarthy. It plays sometimes on the Comedy Channel, although the movie is more quirky than laugh out loud funny. It's the first song you hear in the movie as James Le Gross rides his bicycle thru Venice beach. Stan also wrote the title song "Floundering" for the movie as well.

As for KING RICHARD & 80STHING being the same person, I have no clue. Not that it really matters I suppose. But I have dealt with K.R. & never had a problem with him. I have gotten some good stuff from him & he has never ripped me off or anyone else I have talked to. Sorry, but I got nothing to complain about.

It's so simple. King Richard has time to cash the money order he received.
King Richard has time to parade on his site or hereunder.

But King Richard has no time to send any CD he's got the money for

The version of Far Side of Crazy that's found on the 12" is actually a different mix than what's on the Sammystown album. It's not THAT much different and I know at least one person who swears she can't hear the difference, but I can. And I've seen the 12" that has both mixes on it (hell, I may even have a copy buried somewhere). The differences are more subtle nuances (more focus on Marc's guitar on one than the other, etc.) rather than huge differences. So that's my 2˘ :)

Hi, I'm a rather new Wall of Voodoo fan with a couple of questions. Recently I found, at a used record store, a 12" Far Side of Crazy single. At first I thought it might have been the single with Wrong Way to Hollywood and Dance You F*#%ers on it, but on both sides the label reads "Side 1 Far Side of Crazy 4:02" and that it was Re-mixed by Pete Hammond, along with having a different cover. I would listen to it and see what's on it, but my record player is in the not working state. Another question I have is about a live performance of Back in Flesh. It starts out with Stan introducing Joe "Wildman" Nanini, Bill "Billy-bob" Nolan, Chas Gray, and Marc Moreland. Stan then talked about Marc's new tattoo with a cow on it and then they went into playing Back in Flesh. At the end of it Stan thanks the people at the El Mocombo(?), CFNY, everyone in Toronto. Then he mentions something about a herpes epidemic and it ends. Thanks for any help that can be given.

hey everyone. Sheldon here. Just a little note about the song "I wanna be a boss." One long weekend I was digging in Marcs' box of demo tapes (and there are a ton of them) and I stumbled on an instramentel that was the band playing what later became "I wanna be a boss" I asked Marc and he said he never hear the song but he remembers practicing it with the band right before stan left. So I played him the song "I wanna be a boss" and his jaw dropped and he let out a little laugh then left the room. Sorry about my spelling. I can't spell worth a tit.

Hello,

I have been a Wall Of Voodoo fan for a while now and I was wondering if anyone knows of another "Mexican Radio" music video? I have the
video by Wall Of Voodoo on the tape called "The Beast Of I.R.S." but when I was around seven years old I remember a video for "Mexican Radio" that wasn't done by Wall Of Voodoo. It was on Mtv when Colin Quinn was a vj. I was wondering if El Vez might have done the video. As you all know El Vez did a remake of "Mexican Radio" on the album "Graciasland". If any of you might know if El Vez did a video, or if Wall Of Voodoo had a second video for "Mexican Radio". I would appreciate it immensely. Thank you very much for your time!

Hi all, I'm a longtime WOV fan who is trying to find someone who will trade live WOV shows (preferably on CDR, but I can do tapes too). I have a ton of live shows by other bands, but can't find anyone with WOV, so I'm hoping somebody here can help. My email is aml65@excite.com and my list of live shows is at: http://pages.prodigy.net/amlsds/

Also, sad news about Marc's health, but glad he seems to be doing OK for now. I work in a hospital, and this seems like a good place to put in a plug for anyone who cares to go out and become an organ donor - and then make sure your friends and family know you want it that way. While you are at it, drop a line to your congressman about getting some national health care - Marc probably owes his life to the fact that he got sick in a civilized country where health care is considered a right, not the priviledge of the rich. I read lots of bellyaching here about how it sucks to be in a bidding war over a rare CD, and how unfair it is that music is scarce (and I agree) - think how it feels to be on the liver transplant list in the USA.

Hello all,

This is for those of you who were wondering how to get your hands on some Nervous Gender music backed by the guys in Wall of Voodoo. Edward, former frontman of Nervous Gender, is now making CDs of that available to those of you who would like to buy it. The CD consists of 8 tracks of the Nervous Gender "Live at the Roxy" show and 1 track from the Variety Arts Center show all of which include Marc, Bruce, Ned and Chas, with Joe appearing on the Variety Arts Center cut. Edward has also included two cuts from Gobscheit which was a side project of his own from the same time period. Those don't have any WoV personnel on them, but they're cool bonus tracks. In addition to all that he has included two tracks from his current project, "Kali's Thugs". All of this can be yours for a mere $25 (in the form of a money order), which includes postage and handling. Email Edward at Nervousgender@yahoo.com for the payment address and for answers to any questions you may have about the CD. This is a great opportunity to get some rare music that's never been available to the general public before, so grab it while you can. Happy listening!

Rock On,

Ms. Vieuxdo here,

I've been emailing back and forth with Edward, former frontman for Nervous Gender, the past few days and he'd talked to me about the bootleg recordings mentioned below. I know how suspicious all of us are of people claiming to have known band members or, even worse actually BEING band members. I wanted to let you all know that Edward is entirely legit and so are the recordings he has. I personally attended several of the Nervous Gender gigs back in the old days when the guys from WoV were playing with them and I remember Edward well. He was a nice guy back then and he still is. At the moment he's working out the logistics of making the music mentioned here available and you'll all be the first ones to know where you can get it when everything is worked out. So keep an eye on the wall!

howdy !!! King Richad here....

Well, my 'puter crashed about a week ago. It fried a few drivers such as the sound card & video card, floppy. I am on the net & that is about it!!!!! I am trying to work on a few things & will let you know when they are done. One is a interview with STAN RIDGWAY called "THE 5 DEADLY THINGYS & ONE ALTERNATE." Don't ask me why I named it that. It will be up I hope by this weekend on the STANFAN site.

STAN if you are reading this, THE DISC IS HUGE !!!!!!! I love it...
I will also list it on STANFAN. The name I am putting it under is "BUGZAPPER-the demos" (sorry guys, but no trading on this one right now. Can't do any burning with the shape my computer is in.) But JTL, TOBY D. CHROME OXIDE & J.T email me, trust me....

I have noticed with SHADOWOV as well as RED TOWER, true the sound is that good, but not to many boots are, except for DANCE OF DEATH. Only because it was taped from a radio broadcast. Also SPIT OUT THE WINDOW is great. As for an ANDY era, Is there is a cdr out there of the MADAM WONG show from 6/2/88 (TOBY ????) That show has great sound.

As for what JOE NANINI did after he left, In the last few years on this forum it was said he worked in a sewing factory & once shared a candy bar with them while pumping gas. I had always heard he ran a junkyard. Musically, He joined THE LONESOME COWBOYS . In the 90's, he did session work for DANGERHOUSE RECORDS(?) 80% of which he didn't get credit for doing. In 1996 he made a recording called SIENNA NANINI-BOHICA. A 7 song blast at head of the christian coalition RALPH REED. One song is actually called "WHY I WANT TO F#$K RALPH REED" As far as known the band SIENNA NANINI didn't really exist. just JOE & some friends having fun on this recording. If there was ever to be a full cd released instead of the ep, we will never know. With JOE gone, that is that....

more to come.

Okay , I don't check the Ridgway section, but I'll take your word

If so, there are many great musicians out there

Leonard Cohen went for lengthy stretches of time between many of his

and yes I live in the past... present and future

I'll take sammystown, happy planet, ugly americans, upon my wicked son, sins of our fathers, PRETTY & TWISTED, DEPARTMENT OF CROOKS, If I were a carpenter, and Marc's forthcoming release on kitchen whore over whatever/whichever records stan has "put out"

but hey WOV is always supreme-
and I'm including Stan in that too ... so don't go on with the "Our

Stan Ridgway's new one...

NEW TIMES / Los Angeles 11/4/99 Stan Ridgway / "Anatomy" - New West/UltraModern Records

If it's true that beneath the chest of every cynic beats the broken-heart of an optimist just wishing his eyes weren't so damned good, the longstanding party line on Stan Ridgway may be just slightly askew.

Too often remembered either as the bolo-bedecked New Wave smart-ass whose mug surfaced from a pot of boiling beans singing the glories of Mexican radio, or some seen-it-all musical reincarnation of Raymond Chandler with a penchant for Ray-Bans and filter-tips, the "real" Ridgway has often seemed elusive at best. Small wonder; plying his trade in a devalued cult of personality, Stan's never underestimated the value of a good persona - indeed, it's those second and third party viewpoints that have made many of his story-songs so tellingly jaundiced, if perceptively right on the money.

Set against that history, Ridgway's last outing, the largely acoustic "Black Diamond" was a warm, often brilliant surprise from an artist many broken-hearted critics probably thought they'd neatly pegged and filed away long ago. Ridgway may have emerged from this fair city's vaunted early 80's Punk/New Wave history, but that so-called "scene" wasn't much more than a well-timed venue for a band (his original Wall of Voodoo) whose instincts were much artier and - dare we say it - tasteful than their peers.

It came as no surprise to longtime Stan fans that his disparate affections for Sun Records, be-bop, Merle Travis, Dylan, Mose Allison and the intrigues of history were genuine and not the product of some cynical, irony-of-the-age marketing shuck. But it was refreshing to hear him weave them so effortlessly into his work, that quirky, distinctive baritone suddenly finding its rightful niche as a true American original; no surprise he's often more appreciated on the far side of the pond.

Frustrated with the vagaries of the pop music game, Ridgway also embarked on a second, promising career as a film composer, work that's seemingly shaded his recent "Anatomy" release as much as that afore-mentioned singer-songwriter canon informed "Diamond". The new album's perspective is often oblique, if increasingly personal (and in the case of the haunting "Mission Bell," ever more gripping), even if it comes at the immediate expense of what record-biz crit-wits call "accessability" - you're mature adults, so deal with it.

How'd it go down? Why'd it crumble when they were on a sales high with Call of the West? Sure it wasn't Dark Continent, and they had that dorky guy (Stan's friend???)who
looked like a misplaced devo cover band dude playing keyboards(just my luck he probably posts on this forum - sorry, man, was just exaggerating a little) ... but still damn good and not much compromising. I still can't get enough of "They Don't Want Me" - even recently had a dream I was at a WOV concert and they opened up with they don't want me and Marc just killin the place with his guitar and doing half the vocals and joe had the mother lode of frying pans to pound out that percussion- even better Bruce put down the grumpiest bass line of all time for this intro. .. was weird like most dreams
OK enough tangental rambles. Right off the bat I'm not a huge fan of Stan.. so maybe this is skewing my guesses here but:

reasons they broke up:
1.) Stan got an ego after he got his smirky mug known nationally for the video of that fateful song Marc wrote and then decided he wanted to be Uncle Remus and write bland albums which cried out for the guitar that made him? Little did he know this would lead to a lifetime of playing the coach house once a year for people who get their jollies out of hearing that little nasal toned mouse who bailed on WOV mumbling about fraternity guys from Tulane in the audience???

am i completely off?

oh well, I just get depressed when I see what they had- check out how cool they were doing back in Flesh at the improv. They all had some kinda group sickness that was great. They looked good, they sounded completely mega outer space, and were even kind of intimidating. And it all went up when they were album away from really carving their names in the tree

damn
oh well, at least it led to Andy coming on board and creating some cracking concerts and twisted little collection of great, seedier songs

who was there- tell the story

Hey Bill!

Early in '83 (April, I think), Wall of Voodoo played at place in Milwaukee called "Palms" or some such.

A band called "SpiderVision" opened. I remember some of the members were dressed as spiders and one of the songs they played was "Rock the Casbah."

Palms was in downtown Milwaukee. I'm pretty sure it was Milwaukee....

I had just got out of boot camp and we went to Milwaukee, because we couldn't drink in Chicago-age limit of 21. If there happen to be any recordings/photos of this show, please let me know.

Hello all,

Marc isn't in the States anymore. I got an email from his wife a couple days ago to let me know Marc had returned to France and the hospital there for a little while. His visit to the States really wore him out and he had a little relapse, but his wife is confident he will get better and stronger after some rest and relaxation. With the healthcare system the way it is in the United States, treatment is so expensive here it's out of most people's price range. However, he can get treatment relatively free in France, so that's where he will be. I'm still forwarding emails and snail mail cards to him if anyone wants to give him a boost.

That's all I have to report at the moment. Bye for now.

Hollywood the second time is an amazing song. The song is about a guy who left Hollywood on tour with a band and they had a huge going away party and he left a hero, then he got kicked off the tour and came back to town a total loser. Hence the name. The whole song is about him trying to get home. "Arm hurting bad" cuz he can't get any "Junk".

Hi Toby,

The soundtrack to Cafe Flesh is by Mitchell Froom... no WOV participants, I think, but it is a very WOV-like score. I think it is basically all lifted from an early, long OOP Mitchell Froom album, the title of which I can't remember. I recently got the film on DVD and was surprised to see it had been edited (not the porn scenes), slightly changing the outcome of the plot.

And also, I believe you're right about FX Pope being Jerry Stahl (Stahl appears on Froom's recent CD from a couple of years back).

Can't we all just get along?!?!?!

What's on the soundtrack to Cafe Flesh? Any Voodoo participant's? Rinse Dream used Voodoo's ring Of Fire without their permission in Night Dreams his movie before Cafe Flesh. He paid them back by doing the cover to Call Of The West and the video to Mexican Radio with his partner FX Pope who I think was Jerry Stahl, the author of the book (and now film) Permanent Midnight.

What's going on with Marc? Is he coming back to the States?

RE:the "Crack the Bell" video-This video is a basically a lip synch performance of the song filmed at The Central club on Sunset(which is now The Viper Room).Pretty entertaining though. Both "Crack" and "Call Box" are featured on "The IRS Special" filmed in 1981 and shown a few times in 1982 on MTV."Call Box" and short interview with WOV were filmed at Wall of Voodoo "office" on La Brea. Also shown is a short clip of Stan and Belinda Carlisle berating Jools(the host) for being such a Copeland brown noser. The IRS Special was an hour long show dealing with the then roster of Miles Copeland's record label. also featured were clips of The Go-go's ,Oingo Boingo ,Dead Kennedys,The Cramps and The Alleycats as well as Jools Holland's band. Most of the performance clips of the bands -excep WOV & Go-go's- are outtakes from the "URRRRRGHHI A Music War" film.

To be accurate, on the West of Sammystown CD, Stan sings on "Hands of Love", "Mexican Radio" and "Drive She Said". Marc sings on "Museums" & "The Missionary" (which became "7 Weeks" on the Department of Crooks CD). And Andy sings on "Deep in the Jungle", "Bonnie O'Callon", "In My Night", "Far Side of Crazy", "Frantanize", "Business of Love", "Dance You Fuckers", "Blue Light" and "Faith". "Pick It Up",and "Sammystown Instrumental" are both instrumentals with no vocals.

As for the upcoming album from Marc Moreland, "Take It To the Spotlight" on Kitchen Whore Records, yes Marc does sing on it along with Lisa Dewey and John Parish. As far as I know, it's still due for a June release.

But am I the reason they're out there? No, of course not. The guy I got them from obviosuly got them from someone else and so on. Unless you got those demos directly from someone in the band, and they told you "hey, we never gave these to anyone else", then you may have something. Otherwise someone else out there has them also. And not everyone who trades tapes is on the internet, so don't assume just b/c no one else sold it on ebay that you're the reason people are hearing it.

From: Weetoddid
It's fun and amusing reading the buzz surrounding the "West of Sammystown Demos." You see, if it wasn't for me...you wouldn't be enjoying them now. I don't mean that to sound like boasting, it's simply fact. The story is a long one, but here it is nonetheless.
I have owned those WOV demos plus many others since the early '80s. (Some before Call Of the West, others after Stan's departure.) How I attained them, I obviously can't say, but I sat on them, enjoying them privately until early last year, when I thought it might finally be time to both profit from them, and let other fans enjoy them as well.
I attempted to auction the demos on Ebay in late January 2000, with the title "Look At Their Way." The song list was:

1) Hands of Love
2) Mexican Radio
3) Pick It Up (instrumental)
4) Drive She Said
5) Museums
6) Deep In the Jungle
7) Bonnie O Callen
8) Dead Puppets
9) Far Side Of Crazy
10) Night of Nights
11) This Business of Love
12) Seven Weeks
13) Dance You Fuckers
14) Blue Light
15) This Nights Not Over (instrumental)
16) Faith In the Bottle

The auction was going well until Ebay pulled it. That happens. I then began to receive private offers from interested bidders. I decided to accept the best of the offers, thus releasing these cool demos into the public domain. A few others may have had these demos in their possession, but prior to my sale, I had NEVER EVER seen them. Not on Ebay, any other auction house, fansites, bootleg sites...anywhere.
Someone... possibly the "Anonymous" writer to this open forum from 3-12-01, Renamed the demos "West of Sammystown, changed cover art, and re-titled a few of the songs...but again, that's half the fun of having this stuff right?
Is this an April Fools joke?.. Nope, not a bit. Can I prove all I've told here?..Yes, I think so. Firstly, any Wall Of Voodoo fan who saw the aforementioned auction from over a year ago can at least confirm seeing it on Ebay as early as last January . Secondly, I may re-release "Look At Their Way" with a couple of EXTRA SONGS which I intentionally left out of the collection the first time. I have NOT SEEN these extra tunes listed on any other WOV demo collection. (That includes "Take Me To Your Leader".)
I also have very rare demos and live shows by Oingo Boingo, The Police, The Go-Gos, and others...none of which has EVER been released, bootleg or otherwise...At least yet. But I'm working on it. Any suggestions Voodoo fans? Anyhow, that's the story. Enjoy the demos!

A little Marc Moreland health update...

As I said before, Marc's still in France, but out of the hospital, doing the rest of the tests he needs done and receiving the care he still needs on a regular basis, as an out patient. Overall, his condition is better than it was. From the last updates from his doctor, he's had a 60% improvement. The doctor's still against his returning to the State, saying that it's still too early and would jeopardize his health and the progress he's made. They should find out more about what the doctors now think needs to be done, and when it can be done and all that within the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately, although things are looking up, Marc is far from cured, and it doesn't mean he's completely out of trouble yet. I'll keep you posted when I hear more.

And now for a Marc Moreland music update. His new cd is being mastered as I type. As far as we know right now, it's gonna be released on Kitchen Whore Records in June. You can find out a little more information on the News page at Kitchen Whore's web site at http://www.kitchenwhore.com.

That's all for today. Rock on.

Well, the mysteryman (or woman) has spoken... and quite eloquently I might add.

And BTW I as well LOVE Adam and the Antz, as can be detected whilst perusing my boots list. It's the first listing and there are many demos included there.... really early rare shit.

So now that have gotten on to more important things, let's talk about said demos.... I played them for Andy and he has floor that these are making the rounds. I recorded him talking about them and will transcripbe it and post what he said, but really quickly... Museums and In My Night he thinks were recorded during the Call Of The West sessions and Stan was not real big on them so they got shelved. They may have been recorded with Richard Mazda... Richard are you out there???? And while we're at it, what about Pick It Up (And Put It In Your Pocket) and Just Drive She Said? Were you around for these demos as well?

Blue light was a demo that he is really perplexed about... because it was only ever a demo that he did himself and no one would have had a copy of that. Frantanize is actually called This Night of Nights. The Missionary is a demo of Seven Weeks that ended up on the Dept of Crooks album.

So There you have it. I'll post more later....

Ok, I might as well speak about the SAMMYSTOWN demos. After all, I am the one selling them on ebay.Pardon me for not stating my name.

Believe it or not, I have had these demos for about a year & did not know it. I did a massive trade once covering everyone from PETSHOP BOYS to THOMAS DOLBY in video, MADONNA to SOFT CELL in posters, tapes, albums, cassettes & cds. I had put in the request that if any WOV was in her tradeables, I would take them. When I got this package, one of the cds had written on the disc "WALL OF VOODOO demos". Thinking this was the TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER demos, I filed it away as an extra. A few weeks ago, I lost my job. So I started selling on ebay again. I remembered that I had the extra demos cd & was putting it on ebay at the time. I put it in to listen to it (becuse I am crazy about the song TEST TUBE BABY)My jaw dropped as I started listening to this. I mean, it is like hearing a long lost album. I start it out at $9.99 not knowing what will happen. When they have been selling rather high I have been adding extra stuff for the winner, to make it right in my mind. If you want to buy a copy but can not go through the ebay process, email me through ebay and make me an offer. If you want to trade, make me an offer. As a matter of fact TOBY, I love ADAM & THE ANTS. You never know, so just ASK ME. I am not trying to break anyones bank, just put food on the table & put gas in the car.

Oh, and ED, let me tell you, I am so envious of you. Wish I had that bass myself. I hope this makes what I am doing seem a litle bit more acceptable to our writer with such harsh words against us "WOV FANS"

Hello all, and thanks to Mrs Vieuxdo to update us about Marc.

Thanks to Toby for "Joyride" infos

I didn't want to offend anybody about ebay. And Mrs V. is right auctions are generally starting at a low price. But an Eminem fan can
buy a record at $12 and a Wov when have to pay $80 (plus various fees so let's say $100). I'm not sure it's very fair. That's nobody's fault, just a fact. Sorry but I don't care about Eminem and I do love Wov...I didn't complain, I tried to make more people happy (Including me :-). That's why I suggested to share copies of oop's.

PS : I also trade nuclear secrets. Low-price copies welcome.

Later.

Hello all,

I haven't posted anything in a long time because there hasn't been anything much to report. The last I heard about Marc was he was well enough to go home for a while but still had frequent trips to the hospital. There's still a possibility that he'll need a liver transplant, but I've had no official word when, were or if it will actually take place. When I hear more, I'll let you know.

On the subject of Bruce's ex-bass guitar, yes I sold it to Ed before I made a cross-country move a couple years ago. Since I bought it from a pawn shop many, many years ago after it was hocked and never picked up, I legitimately owned it and it was mine to do with as I pleased. If someone has a problem with that, that's tough shit. I could just as easily sold it to another pawn shop instead of to Ed who I know will treasure it as much as I did. And the band member's jacket the fool was ranting about being sold is still in my closet and will stay there. As Ed said, before you stick your foot in your mouth again, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!

On the subject of trading and selling on ebay, I agree with Toby. There's nothing wrong with it and from what I've seen in the past, most of the auctions start at a very reasonable price. If people want to bid items up, that's their perogative. And if fans want to trade back and forth, let 'em trade! These aren't nuclear secrets, folks. They're CDs and tapes.

That's it for me this time. Rock on.

Ms. Vieuxdo

O.K. there people....

I have a plethora of boots and have always opened my doors to trade's, I have just never gotten any takers. For the record, my boot's are listed on:

http://www.smutzine.com/boots/

I got a copy of West Of Sammy's Town and it's amazing!!!! And I traded for it. So it's possible to trade for it. You can not fault a guy for posting something on e-bay and letting it raise in price. he didn't start it at fifty bucks or anything. All of those people that bid on it could have e-mailed the guy and tried o set up a trade. It is usually considered good ettiquete to offer something in the trade besides blank cdrs or tapes. I think for the most part we all listen to other stuff too, so if you don't got any Voodoo maybe some old Adam and the Antz or Bow Wow Wow boots will do. So quit complaining and get e-mailing. I started with nothing and emassed a collection through percerverance and hard e-mailing.

BTW Ensenita Joyride WAS a band that Marc was in. They were around in France the first time that Marc went there to live. This was after Voodoo broke up (or as Andy puts it "Went away"). Marc was fed up with the States and went to france to live with his now wife. I believe that they recorded an album. Then when he finally made it back to the states he found out that there was another band with the same name and they were on Dr. Dream records, which ironically was the same label as Andy at the time.

So There you have it.

Sorry I forgot to mention,

For those who think that Andy's era is a few weaker than Stan's (In my opinion it's partly right), just listen Andy cd's. They are GREAT
sound sometimes like "Nick Cave and the bad seeds" but 1 000 miles
higher.

I'm sicked a such talented man probably never won't release anything.

Hello all, Jim and John.

John : OOP copies are enough for me. I'm fully conscious that I'll never get all the original bootlegs except if I win lotto. I try to get original official cd because I don't want to steal my favourite band and I can pay $15. But "Out of print" or "bootlegs" are too expensive for me. Currently I have not "Dance of death" yet, and your copy should be welcome. Of course I'd like to send you, in return, a copy of what I will find in the future, and also pay for your charges.
Just let me know if you're still ok.

Ed : Are you the friendly guy from New Orleans who wrote me ?
You got Bruce's bass ???? Congrat !!!

Jim : I'm not sure to fully understand what you wrote hereunder about
the winner of "Grampa" because of my bloody bad english.

I fully agree with the end of your message, and I apologize for my ambigous previous one. I'm still ok to send a copy of what I got to anyone ask for, but oop's only. No way to injure the band who enjoys me for years.

About ebay : If some of you are ok we could help each other :
I could (and maybe you could) do the best, in order to win an high bid once a year (for example) and share it with the "ring of friendly fans in touch" in sending a cdr to you.

When I said it's impossible for me to get official bootlegs, I actually can spend $80 for a cd once a year, but not much.
If you are in the same situation, maybe we could organize an such
arrangement. (And overall not to bid against each other)

Let me know what you think about it.

PS : GET WELL MARC ! Plz, Mrs Vieuxdo, keep us updated.
PS II : Someone said to me that "Soul Coughin" sound as Wov (Stan's era) Unfortunately (or fortunately ?) It's wrong .
I guess nobody sounds like Wov and that's also why we do love them and
do need their unique records.

Have a good day,

Chris

Hello All! Christophe, I can't believe you have stuff posted on this board, small world!

I for one don't have any problem with the guy on EBAY selling his demo CDR's. Face it, if not for him most of us would have gone through life without knowing of its existence. At least now the possibility exists that we can hear it. Getting something 'new' from a favorite band that's been gone for a long time is incredible. For me it's impossible to put a price on it, it's worth far more to me than I paid, that much is certain. I currently have the "West of Sammystown" and have the "Take me to Your Leader" and "Grampa's House" enroute to me as we speak. I only received one through auction, the balance through requests and trades although I did end up paying for "Grampa's House" though nowhere near the 70.00 that the winning bidder paid at the most recent auction. Yeah it takes some nerve to request a trade from someone who just shelled out 70.00 for a CD on EBAY, but I teach my kids that it never hurts to ask. The seller in question seems like a good enough guy (great guy actually), although I don't have any way to verify it. I consider email correspondence to be private so I will not divulge any information that we exchanged, I will suggest that the complainer consider that he knows nothing about the seller and his particular situation. Given the tone of the complainers message I'm not certain that it would make a big difference in his attitude but I'm going to give him (the complainer)the benefit of doubt.

I will include my email address although it will change in the next month or so. I've been looking at boards for a while but never posted, my mistake. I've been fortunate enough to make internet friends with several folks who enjoy the same tunes as I do. By and large it's a great group. For the record, I will not sell anything, period. I will not make CDR of anything that is not OOP, so don't even ask. If there is interest in trades, so long as it doesn't violate any policies on this board I'd be willing. Love to hear some bootleg Dept. of Crooks, Prieboy, WOV, Stan.

So Long For Now,
JClark4@kc.rr.com

Hello all,

Frenchie is back :)...I'm sure there is some guitars players here and
I'd like to know if Marc plays normal or open-tuning.
I'm Fully UNABLE to understand how to play "Back in flesh"
Where do these chords come from ??? Is it a matter of effect ???
Is it the "Blue Box" touch ? I guess It's just the Marc touch but
I'd like you to confirm. It's stranger than "Gang of four" first album.

Thanks for your help.

PS : Following my message from yesterday I forgot to mention: some wov fans are really nice and friendly guys, especially both who emailed me.

PS II : Plz could you confirm that Marc played with a band named "Ensanada Joyride" in 1989 and if a record from them still exists ???

PS III : What's about Marc's health ?(again)

Hello all,

First of all, sorry for my broken english :-(( I'm french and learned
english with "Ultima on line", not the best school isnt'it ?

The first time I heard Wov was in 1981 (Back in flesh)but I didn't realize how good the band was. (I was a fucking metal freak) Now they are my favorite band for years, and I used to listen my old "Dark Continent" Lp once a day at least. But it's too late...I missed all the videos and rare tracks released during the 80's and early 90's.

Of course I got all the new and used Wov/Stan/Andy records available in my region (Southern France)...But it's not enough for a true Wov-addicted.

I tried e-bay, but I can't afford to pay $60 or 80 (plus shipping and
bidpay fees) and just won "Montezuma"

What about dance of death, what about West of Sammystown or Grampa's house ???(I'm currently bidding for $45 but I probably will lose the battle tonight) I even never saw Wov live nor in a fucking video clip !!!

What can I do ? I can't spend $300 to get 3 cd's and I guess I'm not
the only one...

Why do the others Wov fans refuse to share their unavailable records
and videos, as it's impossible to buy them ?

I don't understand a such greedy attitude, and I promise to send a
copy of all my future Wov unavailable records to anyone who ask for it
(for the price of shipping and blank cd only)

At this time I just own the complete official Wov/Stan/Andy discography except "dance of death"

But if anyone is interested, no problem, just e-mail me
nyxdorf@altavista.fr

Later

PS : The most important : What about MARC'S HEALTH ????????????

Here is what the guy e-mailed me aobut them.....

"As for this cd... wow, songs like MISSONARY. It should
have been on there. As for DANCE, it is not the same
version. FAITH would have shaken a few people up.
Not to crazy about the song FRANTANIZE. As for BONNIE
O'CALLON I can't put my finger on it, but I have heard
that somewhere in another form. FAR SIDE is the "easy
listening" version pehaps. DEEP IN THE JUNGLE it pretty
much the same just a little raw in this demo. As for
IN MY NIGHT, the sound is prety darn good I think.
I can see why the song BLUE LIGHT was not used. whew..

The Stan songs are interesting. Hands of love is the
same except the ending is different. Whole different
mix of MEXICAN RADIO (most noable is the vocals & the
"mexican keyboard" part in the middle is not there.)
Th instrumental of PICK IT UP & PUT IT IN YOUR POCKET
is great. DRIVE SHE SAID (voodoo syle)has a few
different lyrics, he still hadn't figured it out yet on
the direction he was going with this song."

So maybe that gives you more of an idea what they are...
I would bid if I were you... I've never seen them before and I have a shit load of stuff.

Hi Everyone,
If anyone is intrested, I know there can never be another WOV but the closest thing to them is a band from Australia named "The Cruel Sea" and I've been listening to them for years. I've always considered them to be the Australian Wall Of Voodoo. They are really cool, to sample them, go to Napster and look up the band under artist then try the track titled "Dakota" and see if you see any similar threads. They are still together as well.
The cd "This is not the way Home" is great, so is the title song from the cd. They have a the same gritty feel as WOV.
But like I said, they are not WOV nor will they ever be, but it's really cool music and who isn't open to new cool stuff that's not the same boring stuff on the airwaves these days.
Happy listening
Get Well Soon Marc!

Hey Sheldon,
good to see a post from one of the crooks. I'll always remember the band- and of course remain eternally distraught that I never saw you guys live . Wasn't it just a one show deal up in SF? Anyhow, I'm wondering if you could give me the phone number for that crusty dude with all the TVs in his midwest barn- yeah him, the guy who rambled on the cd about mtv and hair comin' out of noses and asses or whatever! I'd like to have a beer with that character. By the way, whose idea was it to stick talking tinas voice on the disc? You were part of an alltime classic album. one day the world will wise up

Hello all,

Sorry I didn't answer the last post sooner, but I was out of town last week and I'm only now catching up on things.

I've had nothing new to report on Marc's condition other than his spirits have definitely been lifted due to all the cards, letters and emails he's been getting from all of you. He is still in France and will remain there for an undetermined amount of time. While it would be nice to be home where he can understand the doctors and such, the medical care he's receiving in France is free of charge. As all uf us here in the U.S. know, the medical care system sucks and extended hospital stays like Marc's would bankrupt all but the very richest. So, for the moment, Marc remains in France. If I have anything else to report, you'll see it here first.

That's all folks!

I live in France (somewhere in south east) my english is under average (sorry) but if I could help him one way or another, no problem. In case, let it me know (e-mail : wyndorf@altavista.fr)

( I owe him a lot, enjoying his records for 19 years , the most original guitar playing I've never heard )

PS i've never seen Wov on stage, if one of you possibly trade videos
just e-mail me

Get well Marc, some people remember you, all over the world.

Hello all... against my better judgment, I have decided to become a college radio DJ! The show's name is "Exhuming The '80s" and, as you can probably guess by the fact that I'm posting here, yes, I will be playing Wall of Voodoo! And no, I don't mean I'm gonna slap "Mexican Radio" on once and then forget about the boys. My first show (tomorrow - 1/22/01, 2-4 pm EST) will end with Dark Continent in its entirety. For more info, including a RealAudio link to the show, check out http://members.aol.com/exhumingthe80s. Thanks all, and long live WoV!

HOWDY !!!!!! KING RICHARD HERE...

First.... MARC. get well man, we need more music out of you. Can't get enough of that sound. You think we would forget you? 'yer crackin' me up. When I was in high school, all the kids blasting VAN HALEN & that other metal crap. I could stop traffic going through town blasting RING OF FIRE & CRACK THE BELL. Since you are going to read this, I wanted to thank you. JTL got you to sign a beer coaster for me. It has got to be the coolest thing. While others sign promo pick, if they were even the one who signed them. From a member of WALL OF VOODOO, JTL agrees with me, it seems not only cool but fitting. WALL OF VOODOO was, is and will always be part of the soundtrack that I lived to.
Did I just say that? hhhmm, 'nah I'll leave it....

Second. RICH, (hey, nice name.) You need that ROOM with a view alternate, their actually is 2 alternates. making 3 out there. E-me dude. let me see what I can do to help. Here is that e-thing

If you haven't sent anything off to marc and you like wall of voodoo in any way- write him a little something. After all, Marc was the heart and soul of WoV (in my humble opinion). Plus Ms. Vieuxdo(Ms. E) is making it easy on us and saving us postage by giving us the USA P.O. Box

now my query...
A while back when I was really getting caught up in WoV it was right after Stan left and I was finally old enough to get into some clubs (that's why I'm a bigger fan of Andy, I think?.. well there are lots of reasons but that's a different topic)I bought the single for big city . It was a 45 and had an extremely cool version of room with a view on it. Way better than the one on Sammystown. Anyone know if that has been MP3'ed or if it can be bought anywhere?

get better marc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah that makes sense because I don't recall ever seeing the Call of the

they orange record you refer to was a 12 inch single of Mexican Radio. I believe that Call of The West was the b-side. It had Mexican Radio on one side and it went into a dub version of it also.

Was there ever an orange lp with purple and green stripes painted on it
released by WOV? I remember Mexican Radio being on it, but somehow I have
it mixed up with Afghan Wigs. Maybe AW did a cover?

Anyway, it was the first record I ever bought. I was 6 or 7. Someone
pointed out to me that it wasn't by Afghan Wigs. I wish I still had the
LP. Someone please help me clear this up.

TIA,
Lynne.

MARC MORELAND UPDATE

While there's no official update on Marc's actual health, I did get an email from his wife this morning and I wanted to let you all know what she said. So far he's received the cards that were sent to the address in France plus I've been forwarding all the email good wishes to his wife. She's been printing them out and taking them to the hospital for him when she visits. She says all the love and good will being sent to him has definitely boosted his spirits just like we hoped it would. So please keep those cards, letters and emails coming!

Hard as it may be to believe, Marc really has no idea how popular he is and how many fans still exist. I know a lot of you feel the way I do about him and the music he's given us. Marc and his music have been a part of my daily life for two decades now. Even after 20 years I still speed down the road in my car creating a major traffic hazard playing air guitar along with Marc to Can't Make Love and Tse Tse Fly. And I scream down the highway with Dept. of Crooks Plan 9 From Las Vegas blasting from the car stereo too. Marc has created his own style of playing that is so unique no one else will ever be able to duplicate it. And you know what? When I'm 90 years old, I'm STILL going to be speeding down the highway playing air guitar along with Marc! And on a personal level, Marc has to be one of the nicest people I've ever met.

So how about the rest of you? What is it that you really love about Marc and/or Wall of Voodoo in general? Tell all! I'm forwarding all email and copying and pasting all positive posts to Marc's wife so she can print them out and read them to him. So keep posting and keep emailing. You really are helping!

Ok, I'm outta here. Bye for now!

Elizabeth

P.S. To Gwen from New York…the package arrived and will be sent on to Marc this Friday. Email me at vieuxdo@bigfoot.com if you have any questions!

Thanks.

Hi fans and friends of WOV. Does anyone out there have or know of anyone with a jet plane? I'm serious! I want to get Marc Moreland back from France as this is what he wants more than anything. But..unfortunately he is to weak to take a commercial flight, so if you know of some well off compassionate person who would enjoy creating a miracle for Marc and his family we sure would like to hear from you. I would gladly pay for the gas. Thanks, Bonnie Moreland (Marc's Mom). PS Ya never know till ya try

BREAKING NEWS ON MARC

The Moreland family are trying very hard to get approval from his doctor to
sign off on him so they can bring him home to the U.S. No one's quite sure
yet how it will happen or what the time frame is, but if all goes well he
won't be in France much longer. The new address is:

Marc Moreland
PO Box 1384
Coos Bay, OR 97420

Things are moving much faster than we ever thought they would and the
situation is literally changing daily. It's no problem if mail is on the
way to the France address because it will just be forwarded here to the
States by his friend if it gets there after he's gone. But any new mail
should go to the PO Box.

Hey Stan

Seriously, thanks for your comments. I don't have time for more stories today except to say that life is way too short and that i am too painfully aware of my own mortality to forget that i am the limey bro of one of the most original bands that ever crawled outa west hollywood and that it was an honour to be a part of it. mazda

Ok, this will teach me to copy and paste without making sure the original is correct. I've been informed we have yet another typo in Marc's address. Here's what is should be in its entirety(Here is the latest address 1/3/01 JtL):

Marc Moreland
PO Box 1384
Coos Bay, OR 97420

For those of you who have already sent something off, don't worry, I'm sure it will get there with much headshaking from the French postal clerks and mutters of "Those stupid Americans...." Thanks to everyone who has contacted me and posted on The Wall so far. Looks like we're going to be channeling quite a lot of positive vibes towards Marc.

It's also nice to see you joining in as well, Stan. I've always had high respect for you and your music. You've got as unique a view on life as Marc always has. Rock on.

Cheers,

Elizabeth

Ms. Vieudo, this info on Marc is appreciated. We've talked over the years, of course, but not for a few. The world needs Marc's guitar and wonderfully askew world view now more than ever. Thanks for the address.
And to someone here who's favorite song was "They Don't Want Me" - that's Marc's song all the way, I think I added a line here or there, but it was Marc's grand metal opus to "?" and I was simply the singer.

I always took the song as an answer to some of the critical swipes the band was getting at the time. You know ..one week you're IN. the next you're OUT. But that was my take. Marc has the real answer..so let's get him well and then we can ALL ask him what it REALLY meant?
a happy new aluminum to all,
Stan Ridgway
